🚨 Patient Spotlight: The Danger of Bones 🐶🦴

This sweet girl came to us after her owner noticed she was pawing at her face and clearly uncomfortable. A thorough oral exam revealed the cause — a chicken bone lodged deep in her cheek (buccal pouch) and stuck behind a molar. Ouch! 😣

Sharp and splintered, the bone was causing pain every time she moved her mouth or tried to eat. Fortunately, Dr. Ritzi was able to successfully remove the bone, and this pup is already feeling so much better. 💛

⚠️ Bones — especially cooked ones — can be extremely dangerous for dogs. They can:

Splinter and pierce the mouth, throat, or intestines

Get stuck in the mouth or digestive tract

Cause pain, infection, choking, or even require surgery

🦴 Bottom line: No matter how much they beg, dogs should never be given bones — cooked or raw. Period. The risks simply aren’t worth it.

Dr. Marissa Yeaman started with us as a vet assistant—and now she’s back in 2025 as a veterinarian! We’re so proud to see how far she’s come and couldn’t be more excited to have her back on the team.

🐾 Pet Highlight: Willow 🐾
This sweet girl came to us last Monday after a suspected snake bite to her leg.

Thanks to quick action from her family and some TLC here at the clinic, Willow is healing up beautifully! Swipe through to see her progress 💕

With the warm weather, we start to see more snake bites — especially in curious dogs exploring tall grass, woodpiles, or brush. It’s just part of summer here in Virginia.

🚨 If you think your pet has been bitten by a snake:
✔️ Keep them calm and still
✔️ Don’t mess with the wound or try to treat it at home
✔️ Call your vet or head to an emergency clinic right away

Snake bites are painful and can be serious, but with quick care, pets like Willow can make amazing recoveries.
