I want to address the unusually high demand for chicks this year. Hatcheries are completely sold out, feed stores have lines at the door & people are buying just to resell for profit. I’ve never seen anything like this.
Perhaps it’s the increase in store bought egg prices? If so, I can assure you there will be no money saved by starting your own flock. 6-8 months until they lay, $1,000+ for a coop then $25 per bag of feed…it’s a serious investment. Is it worth it? Well, it depends on your goals. For food security and the enjoyment of owning chickens? Yes! To save money on your grocery bill? No!!!
While chickens are largely considered livestock, they are still sentient beings who deserve compassionate care. I fear many people will realize they’re in over their heads and we’ll suddenly have a surplus of birds searching for new coops. There will be disease outbreaks amongst backyard flocks as adults get rehomed and unwanted roosters will be inhumanely dumped.
Please know, I make this post not to discourage anyone from raising their own flock, but to hopefully encourage thoughtful consideration about what it actually takes to own these animals.
For the love of chickens, make sure you really want the BIRDS and not *just* the eggs.
With that said, what is something you wish you knew before you got chickens? Let’s start a conversation in the comments for new and seasoned owners to share their experiences!
