This is a hard post. I should have done it on Thursday of last week, but I kept putting it off because this post makes it real.

Grover was the best boy. He was happy and quirky. He thought he was a 90 pound Rottweiler when we met other dogs on our walks. I have zero doubt that he would have attempted to protect me at any cost. He was a triple pooper, three times on each walk. He also picked up some piece of vegetation in his beard on every walk.

On Wednesday, a day that was already filled with sadness, I got the word from his mom that he was gone, due to a massive tumor on his heart.

He is going to be so missed. And I’m not ready to accept his absence. 💔

As professional pet sitters, we aren’t supposed to have favorites. But sometimes a furry little creature works his way into your heart to stay forever. Charlie was one of those. He had diabetes, among other issues, and his glucose was never stable enough to be able to skip the glucose test. That meant 4 needle sticks every day. He was the canine version of the “get off my lawn” grumpy old man, but he also had an incredible capacity to love those who cared for him. He loved his toys and frozen green beans. He loved his parents, his brother Marshal, and his pet sitter Tiffany. Congestive heart failure wrapped its ugly tentacles around his little life and he left this earth yesterday. We were honored to be part of his life, and we are better for it. 💔

Today is the Nepali celebration of Kukur Tihar, dedicated to the love and friendship of dogs.

Tihar is a five-day Hindu religious and cultural festival in Nepal. The first three days (October 29th to 31th in 2024) focus on the worship of animals. In Nepali culture, it is believed that gratitude and worship shown to animals and gods will bring success and luck into people's lives.

The second day, Kukur Tihar, is for the worship of dogs, who are believed to be the guardians of the gates of heaven in Nepal. On this day, people thank all dogs, whether they are pets or strays, for their loyalty and friendship by placing a marigold garland around their necks and a red tika mark on their foreheads. Afterward, a ritual is performed for the dogs and they are treated to a large feast.
