It’s a BOY! 💙

Megan’s one-month-old little bundle has us completely smitten. The whole family troop joined in for a fun gender reveal party, complete with special icy blue treats. We just can’t get enough of this sweet little guy!

This past weekend, Finnick, our 12-year-old cheetah, underwent surgery to amputate part of his tail following a dislocation. While he wasn’t showing obvious signs of pain due to reduced sensation from a previous tail injury, our team noticed the tail was positioned abnormally and wasn’t moving correctly. A dislocation like this carries a high risk of tissue damage if left untreated. To protect his long-term health, our veterinary and animal care teams determined that surgery was the best option.

The procedure was a success, and Finnick is now back in his habitat and adjusting well to his routine. The surgery will not affect his mobility or behavior. While tails play an important role in balance during the high-speed chases cheetahs are known for, Finnick, as a geriatric cheetah, has long since retired from sprinting, and continues to move with ease even after the amputation.

Our team will continue to monitor Finnick closely to ensure he remains comfortable!

The health and wellbeing of our animals is always our highest priority, and sometimes that means making difficult but necessary decisions in the best interest of their long-term care.

Recently, Shug, our Asian small-clawed otter, underwent an ovariohysterectomy (commonly known in the animal world as a spay). Over the past two years, Shug experienced multiple stillbirths despite careful monitoring via ultrasound and radiographs and support from our animal care team during her pregnancies. Following her most recent stillbirth, our animal care and veterinary teams, along with consultation with the Species Survival Plan, determined that surgical intervention was the best course of action to safeguard her health. We’re happy to report that Shug has fully recovered from the procedure and is now thriving. You can spot her swimming around her habitat.

While Shug may no longer be able to reproduce, her health, comfort, and enrichment are our top priorities. At the Dallas Zoo, every decision we make is guided by a single goal: giving our animals the care and opportunities they need to thrive – not just today, but for many years to come!

We are deeply saddened by the passing of David Cargill earlier this month, a gifted sculptor whose artistry has touched many, including those of us here at the Dallas Zoo.

David created three stunning sculptures that are part of our Zoo’s collection. One of these is "Acrobatics on a Kudu," pictured here. His work continues to inspire and remind us of the powerful connection between art and nature.

We are grateful to have his legacy as part of the Dallas Zoo.

Heads up 📢: From July 28 through August 1, the Gregg Hudson Giants of the Savanna will be closed for scheduled maintenance across the area, including pool cleaning. During this time, our elephants, giraffes, kudu, and guinea fowl will be off habitat.

Don’t worry, the rest of Wilds of Africa will still be open for guests! Thanks for your understanding as we take care of these spaces our animals call home!

Big changes are ahead for our gorilla bachelor troop! 🦍

Our bachelor troop of western lowland gorillas, Shana, Zola, Juba, and B’Wenzi, will be relocating together to another AZA-accredited zoo later this fall. This move comes as part of a recommendation from the Gorilla Species Survival Plan (SSP), a collaborative program that works across accredited zoos to ensure the long-term sustainability of this critically endangered species. The SSP takes into account many factors, including age, personality, and social dynamics, to create groupings that are best for the individual animals and the broader population. This next chapter will give our boys a new social setting and environment that supports their continued growth and well-being.

We’ll certainly miss seeing their faces around the habitat, and we know many of you will, too. Before they head off on their new adventure, we’ll be throwing a Texas-sized farewell party – stay tuned for that!

Looking ahead, we’re excited to welcome new gorillas into that space. We’ll share more updates as those moves are confirmed.

We’re thrilled to share more baby joy at the Zoo! 😍 Our 20-year-old gorilla Megan welcomed a healthy baby in the early hours of Friday, July 18. Both mom and baby are doing great and even made an appearance out on habitat for the very first time this past weekend!

Dad Marcus and big brother Mbani, along with Saambili, are already curious about this little one, quietly watching the little one nestled safely with mom. Megan continues to keep her baby close, so we haven’t been able to confirm the gender just yet. But we’ll share it as soon as we do, along with the name.

You may catch a glimpse of this adorable little one on your next visit, as long as the weather permits and Megan feels comfortable (we take all cues from mom).
