Copied from my reptile group for Texas peeps. Hopefully we don't lose power this time.
REPTILE OWNERS
If you have a scale baby and are concerned about losing power and keeping them warm. Please read this:
Hot hands: crack a few of these and set them in your enclosure. Due to the extreme heat of these, please make sure your h**p cannot physically lay ON them to avoid burns
EDITED to add. KNOW YOUR SPECIES AND ENCLOSURE. If you have a h**p that can survive well in lower temps or has a smaller enclosure, don't use them! If you have a h**p in a huge enclosure that requires higher temps and can be hurt with lower temps, then they can be used as long as you have enough ventilation and they are not in an area that your h**p can lay directly on them.
Terra Cotta pot heaters: using a terra cotta pot, bricks and candles, you can set this up and ligbt a candle(unscented) Set this next to your enclosure and keep the candle lit. This will help keep the room warmish. Look it up on Google or pinterest on how to make it!
Fireplace: if you have access to a fireplace, put your h**p in a temporary travel enclosure and place close to the fireplace. Make sure they will get adequate temps
DO NOT FEED YOUR H**P IF YOU DO NOT HAVE POWER. 90% of reptiles use heat to digest. If they don't have heat you put them at risk of blockages. Most h**ps can live weeks without food. A few days will not hurt them.
ANOTHER EDIT TO ADD: All external sources of heat need to be carefully monitored as you can accidentally overheat and kill your h**p. KNOW YOUR SPECIES HEAT REQUIREMENTS!
