2026 - Another update from LABworks

To our community, clients, supporters, and partners,

We are sharing another update as we continue to receive messages and inquiries through this page.

Following the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, the LABworks Board formally disbanded, and the organization is no longer in operation.

LABworks was built around serving medically vulnerable individuals and the service dogs they must rely on. During the pandemic, the reality of widespread illness, necessary isolation, and the increased risk to our staff, clients, volunteers, and dogs made it impossible to safely and sustainably continue our work.

We were also deeply impacted on a personal level. Members of our team faced serious health challenges related to COVID-19, including long-term complications. We have also experienced the loss of a valued member of our team since then and several others have since relocated outside of our service area.

All of these combined circumstances made it very clear that continuing operations was simply not possible. This decision was not made lightly.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who made LABworks great - our clients, volunteers, donors, sponsors, and community partners.

Thank you ALL for trusting us, supporting our mission, and allowing us to be part of something so incredibly meaningful.

These dogs have changed so many lives, including ours - and it was truly an honor to walk alongside you in that journey.

At this time, we are no longer accepting applications, training, or placing dogs.

However, we continue to stand behind the dogs we previously placed.

If you are a previous LABworks client based in Arkansas and need support related to your service dog - specifically, including guidance on training or vetting - you are welcome to reach out through the existing LABworks email. We will do our best to point you in the right directions.

Thank you for being part of LABworks and for the work you continue to do every day alongside your dogs. You will always be part of what this organization stood for.

With appreciation,
The entire LABworks Team

In most recent news, PETCO announced it was saying “No to shock collars.” We couldn’t be happier with their announcement for two reasons:

1. We don’t use shock collars we use E-COLLARS, there’s a difference; and
2. PETCO provides cookie cutter type training and expects every dog to learn the same thing and in the same way. EVERY DOG IS DIFFERENT AND NOT EVERY DOG OR OWNER NEEDS AN E-COLLAR.

PETCO has not equipped or educated themselves enough to understand the nuances of dog training and the various communication tools to have reliable behavior.

And honestly they shouldn’t be expected to as they’re pet store and sell to satisfy our human emotions not our dogs behavior.

Having PETCO educate their customers on an E-Collar is out of their wheelhouse so therefore they shouldn’t sell it in the first place, problem solved eh.

However, the basis for their argument is that they’re only going to support positive reinforcement, great! This quadrant means it will only encourage a behavior, never to stop one. But I wonder if they know we can use the same quadrant and condition an E-Collar as a positive reinforcer.

When our client comes to us with specific goals in mind we talk about the tools we can use to achieve them. We are a suggestion based company as we would never vilify a tool like PETCO did — but rather we ask our clients to personally feel the stimulations that an E-Collar gives and properly educates them on how to use it, but only if it’s suitable for their dog.

When conditioned PROPERLY an E-Collar is the most reliable tool we have to communicate with a dog, PERIOD!
