When someone tells me that their dog cannot be crate trained or they hate it in their crate....
I say, well, we have to change their mindset from negative to positive!! :)
This beautiful boy has severe anxiety in his crate and not crated at home due to his severe destructive behavior. He didn't need a crate until he got into a fight with another dog in household. :( They now need to crate for safety.
Look what happens when good things happen over time!!
Disclosure: Sometimes you need some extra help.... we did use Trazadone to help but it didn't help much. He would cry and push on front of crate that I had to reinforce before he escaped! This is why I like the airline crates or totally enclosed. They are harder to escape from plus they give more of a den like experience. Calming and safer.
๐Fast forward, he now goes into crate on his own free will and waits patiently to get his food. ๐ฅฐ He even lays quietly with no crying or trying to bust out of crate!! ๐ He is being such a good, relaxed boy!! ๐
Training Tip: ALL DOGS should be crate trained when they are a puppy. You never know when you might need to use a crate in the future. If they are trained as a puppy then they will have less anxiety if a crate is used when an adult.
Have a crate is like putting a 2 yr old child in a play pen. It's not mean, it's keeping them safe and out of trouble.
I think some owners need to change their mindset on crates. Need to look at a safety tool and not punishment. I like to say crates are like a babysitter. Keeping them safe and not allowing bad habits when your not home. :)
All my dogs (and my cats too!!)! Even my 4 # Chihuahua mix. I crate train my cats when kittens. Now, I never have issues if need to keep in crate if sick or injured. Cats are less stressed and heal faster because a crate has always been a positive experience. :)
