👑🔬Crown cells!
These mesenchymal cells are multinucleated with their nuclei arranged on the periphery of the cell. They can be observed in soft tissue sarcoma, particularly perivascular wall sheath tumors.

Hematoidin crystals in a hemorrhagic sample 🤩
These amber colored crystals form in low oxygen conditions (tissues and body cavities) as a result of prior hemorrhage and erythrocyte degradation. This sample also has a fair bit of hemosiderin (amorphous blue/black pigment), which is another product of red blood cell breakdown.

✨🫧 Liposarcoma (Canine) 🫧✨

This was an approximately 3-4 inch subcutaneous mass on the neck of a dog with unknown duration. Upon examination, aggregates of adipose tissue were initially observed, but upon continued evaluation there was a population of finely vacuolated spindle cells with atypia (bi-/multinucleation, multiple prominent nucleoli, and mild to moderate anisocytosis and anisokaryosis) - raising concern for an underlying spindle cell tumor, with liposarcoma favored. Grade 2 liposarcoma was confirmed on histopathologic evaluation.

This is a great example of why it is important to spend a little time evaluating a cytology (even what appears to be a straight forward lipoma)!

Erythroblastic islands from a splenic aspirate. Erythroblastic islands contain a central macrophage (also known as a nurse cell) that anchors erythroblasts (developing red blood cells) to deliver iron and helpful cytokines for erythrocyte development. 🔬😊

Ventral cervical mass (dog) - cytology revealed a cohesive cell population often present within a lake of poorly defined cytoplasm. This description/finding is a hallmark for neuroendocrine tissues and neoplasms, and in this case was consistent with a thyroid tumor. Pleomorphism within neuroendocrine tissues can be minimal even in malignant tumors. With that said, we know that a vast majority (90-100%, depending on the study) of thyroid tumors in dogs are non-functional carcinomas. In contrast, thyroid tumors in cats are frequently functional and benign adenomas or adenomatous hyperplasia (
