🐾 Ticks, Alpha-Gal Syndrome & Prevention for Pets and People 🐾
With summer here, ticks are out in full force. They're more than just a nuisance—they can carry diseases that affect both humans and pets.
What is Alpha-Gal Syndrome?
Alpha-gal syndrome is a potentially serious allergy that can develop after the bite of certain ticks, especially the Lone Star Tick, which is common in Virginia. People who develop alpha-gal syndrome can have allergic reactions to beef, pork, lamb, and other mammal products.
Symptoms may include:
Hives or itching
Stomach pain, nausea, or diarrhea
Swelling
In severe cases, anaphylaxis (a life-threatening allergic reaction)
Ticks Can Also Spread:
Lyme Disease
Ehrlichiosis
Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever
Protecting Your Dogs
✔ Use a veterinarian-recommended flea and tick preventative year-round.
✔ Check your dog daily, especially after walks or time outdoors.
✔ Pay close attention to ears, neck, armpits, between toes, and under collars.
✔ Keep grass mowed and brush trimmed around your home.
✔ Ask your veterinarian about regular testing for Lyme disease and ehrlichiosis.
Protecting Yourself & Your Family
✔ Wear long sleeves and pants when in tall grass or wooded areas.
✔ Use EPA-approved tick repellents.
✔ Shower and perform tick checks after spending time outdoors.
✔ Remove ticks promptly with fine-tipped tweezers.
Tick Checks Matter!
The sooner a tick is found and removed, the lower the risk of disease transmission.
At Wash & Wag of Culpeper, we encourage pet owners to check their pets regularly during tick season. If you find a tick, remove it carefully and monitor for any signs of illness. When in doubt, contact your veterinarian or healthcare provider.

Flea & Tick Prevention This Summer 🐾
Summer is here, and fleas & ticks are already active! While we do carry flea and tick shampoo at Wash & Wag of Culpeper, it’s important to remember that shampoo only kills the fleas or ticks currently on your pet — it does not provide long-term prevention.
Here are a few tips to help protect your pets this season:
☀️ Keep pets on monthly flea & tick prevention recommended by your veterinarian
☀️ Check your pets regularly, especially after walks or time outdoors
☀️ Watch around ears, neck, belly, armpits, and between toes where ticks love to hide
☀️ Wash pet bedding often and vacuum frequently during flea season
☀️ If you see fleas or ticks, treat quickly before they spread in the home
Ticks can carry illnesses such as Ehrlichia and Lyme disease, so regular testing with your veterinarian is also a great idea — especially for dogs that spend a lot of time outdoors.
If we notice fleas during grooming, flea shampoo may be necessary to help stop them from spreading in the salon. Please let us know at check-in if your pet has been exposed so we can get them treated right away.

Yesterday Jeff picked up a massive order of black Angus, farm raised, grass fed and grain finished beef for the Farm Store! We're now bursting with ground beef ($8/lb), hamburger patties ($8.5/lb), ribeyes and filets ($23/lb), and a whole lot more! Swing by and grab yours for the Memorial Day weekend and pretend you're the grill master you've always wanted to be. Our prices are competitive to the big-box grocery stores but our products don't have all that sneaky stuff you don't want in your body! Open Wednesdays-Sundays 10-4. We are closed Memorial Day.
