Our Dog of the Day is the Shetland Sheepdog, AKA...the Sheltie!

This ridiculously intelligent, quick, and obedient herder hails from Scotland's remote and rugged Shetland Islands. And, fun fact, Shelties are basically miniature Collies - like the cool, smaller cousin. Standing between 13 and 16 inches tall, Shelties are small, active, and agile herding dogs with a harsh, straight coat that's got a dense undercoat, and comes in black, blue merle, and sable, with white markings. They've got a distinctive look going on, with that long, wedge-shaped head, small, three-quarter erect ears, and deep-chested, level-backed torso. And, let's be real, they're basically genius - easy trainers and total rockstars in obedience, agility, and herding trials. Plus, they're super sensitive and affectionate family dogs who are totally in tune with the mood of the household. Oh, and they love to bark and are a bit reserved around strangers...making them excellent watchdogs. Who's got a Sheltie?

Today’s Dog of the Day!

German Shorthaired Pointers are incredibly intelligent and capable companions that thrive with early training and socialization. With dedication and positive reinforcement, they can become exceptionally well-behaved and loyal friends. This breed's rapid learning abilities and high energy levels make them ideal for active individuals who can provide the necessary mental and physical stimulation. From 6 months to 3 years, GSPs are in a critical development phase, and consistent guidance can help channel their enthusiasm into positive outlets. Embracing the challenges and opportunities of owning a GSP can be a transformative experience that strengthens the bond between dog and owner and fosters a lifetime of adventure and companionship.

Warning for all dog snobs and AKC purists out there, here’s your trigger warning! 😉

Our Dog of the Day is the Schnoodle, because who needs purebred perfection when you can have a puppy that's a master of chaos? These high-energy furballs have personalities for days and are definitely not pushovers - they're like tiny little dictators in fur coats. They tend to love their humans whole-heartedly, and have a great sense of loyalty to their families, mostly because they're secretly plotting to take over the world and need their humans' help. This affectionate, lovable nature makes them a wonderful fit for all kinds of homes – especially if they can be the center of attention, which let's be real, they'll demand anyway. They do have a tendency to become very protective of their loved ones, which means they’re talented watchdogs, but they’ll need early socialization and training to make sure that barking and stranger wariness is kept in check, or else they'll be the neighborhood watchdogs and you'll be the neighborhood pariah.

Among the most ridiculously awesome of all small housedogs, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi is like the ultimate party animal - strong, athletic, and ridiculously lively, this little herder is super affectionate, loves to hang out, but isn't clingy. They're one of the world's most popular herding breeds, because, well, who wouldn't want a cute, smart, and hardworking best friend? At 10 to 12 inches tall and 27 to 30 pounds, a well-built male Pembroke is like a big dog in a tiny tuxedo, minus the awkwardness. With their short but powerful legs, muscular thighs, and deep chest, they're built for a hard day's play, and by play, I mean wreaking havoc. And despite being a little low to the ground, Pembrokes are crazy quick and agile, like they're wearing rocket skates. They come in all sorts of fun colors - red, sable, fawn, and black and tan, with or without white markings, because variety is the spice of life. The Pembroke is a total goofball who loves to play with their human family and is a total genius when it comes to training, mostly because they're master manipulators. This explains their desire to log roll for miles while on a leash…unless they truly believe taking you on a walk was their idea. As herders bred to wrangle cattle, they're fearless and independent, but also super loyal and loving, because they're not afraid to wear their hearts on their sleeves. They make awesome watchdogs, with super sharp senses and a bark that's way bigger than they are, mostly because they're trying to compensate for something. If you're a family who can keep up with their bold but lovable Pembroke's need for adventure and snuggles, you'll never find a more loyal, loving BFF. Today’s Dog of the Day.

Today's Dog of the Day is the ridiculously awesome Toy Fox Terrier!

This pint-sized pup is like a shot of espresso - small but packs a big personality punch. With their silky coats and toy-dog charm, it's no wonder they're often described as 'truly a toy and a terrier.' Originally bred to chase barnyard rats, these little comedians have evolved into the ultimate cuddle buddies. So, what do you get when you mix the snuggliness of a lapdog with the feistiness of a terrier? A Toy Fox Terrier, of course! This tiny tornado stands under a foot tall but has enough charisma to fill a whole dog park. And, as their fans love to say, 'TFTs are truly a toy and a terrier' - a match made in doggy heaven!

A little bit about our Dog of the Day, the Vizsla.

So, according to the AKC, the Vizsla is like a versatile, red-coated superhero built for long days of saving the world, or at least, hunting. For centuries, these rugged but elegant athletes have been the pride of Hungarian sportsmen, and Americans are finally catching on - their popularity is increasing with each passing year. You can easily recognize a Vizsla by their sleek golden-rust coat, which is basically the dog version of a fancy sports car. They can stand between 21 to 24 inches at the shoulder, and they're basically the picture of a lean, light-footed hunter's companion. Those long, silky ears frame a facial expression that's sensitive and loving around the house, but intense when they're at work - kind of like your spouse during tax season. As a hunter expected to work closely with humans, Vizslas form a tight bond with their owners and hate to be left alone, so don't even think about getting one if you're a workaholic. These dogs are athletes of many talents, and they excel at various sports and activities. They're eager and graceful trotters of great stamina, making them ideal jogging or biking companions. But let's be real, if you don't have the time to encourage this breed's full use of its brain, you're basically wasting a good dog, according to an expert on the breed.
