Newfie fact #8… A little history fun fact… In 1802, when Lewis and Clark began their historic 8,000-mile trek across the American continent, a Newfoundland named Seaman was part of the expedition. He was useful as a hunter and guard dog, once saving lives by running off a rogue buffalo that was charging the camp. Today, Seaman is depicted in 10 different Lewis and Clark monuments across the country.

Newfie fact #7…Newfoundland dogs are known to be great for children. Some parents may hesitate because of their natural size and strength. However, these dogs have proven time and again how gentle they are and how easy they are to be around with. As a matter of fact, Newfoundland dogs have a famous nickname: nanny dogs. During the Victorian times, many families trusted and used these dogs to watch and care for younger children. As big as these dogs are, children can rely on them to be great playmates.

Newfie fact #6…Instead of doing a normal doggie paddle like most dogs, Newfoundlands do more of a breaststroke which gives him power and drive in the water. This stroke also allows Newfoundlands to swim underwater.

Newfie fact #5…Due to their waterproof and double coat, Newfs are the only breed that is designed to swim all year round, even during the winter.

Newfie fact #4… Unlike many large breeds, Newfoundlands make great house dogs—they’re laid-back, relaxed, and are more than happy to spend hours lounging at your feet. But too much lounge time can lead to an overweight Newfie, which is why it’s important to make sure Newfoundlands have a large yard or enclosed space to exercise in. Supplement with daily walks and the occasional swim and your Newfoundland will stay in tip-top shape.

Newfie fact #3… You won’t find a breed more loyal than the Newfoundland. Newfies are known to physically place themselves between their humans and strangers as a form of protection. They’re also commonly referred to as a “nanny dog” due to their gentleness toward children in the family. 🥰
