Kids by the Acre

Kids by the Acre We are a little homestead in Crown Point NY. Trying our hand at raising animals, gardens and a family. We love this land!

We want our kids to learn to take care of the earth, know how to care for animals, and feed themselves through their work.

Is 25 Rhubarb plants too many? Nah. Currants flowering, asparagus is up. Springtime fun.

We finally have our own Nigerian dwarf Buck! Hopefully it’s not too late for him to breed the Doe’s this year. We also got a beautiful blue eyed male kid for future breeding.

We haven’t been doing much with this site lately but that will hopefully change. Currently I’m a little strapped for time working from home, Social Work/ office and tech work (love it). We also work from home as Family Care Providers (more on that some day too).
We are raising our 5 kids on our 60 acre family homestead. We are a 4-season outdoor family. Just to give you an idea, we buy of our kids NYS lifetime hunting and fishing licenses for their first birthday. I highly recommend it.
Update: This year we raised 5 pigs, 5 Turkeys for meat. We butchered the birds ourselves. We have 15 chickens and 7 goats (4 Nigerians for milk an 3 alpines for meat?) to raise through this winter. We are just finishing up the old barn. In the spring we have a miniature Jersey Heifer calf ordered. We also keep honeybees (our first homestead animal 8 years ago). Firewood, gardening, camping, faith and outdoor adventure is the lifestyle we stride for. We are far from perfect but somehow it all works out. I took these pictures today when involved with something else but I almost missed it because of preoccupation. Our life is just like this moment, brief but important and meaningful. This moment happened during a dark rainstorm but for less than a minute this beautiful event happened. The end of the rainbow is on the spot Leeann and I were married 12 years ago. There’s a tipi frame there now.

Lots of work done this weekend; poured a cement floor for the barn, poured an extra slab off the woodshed, future use will be disclosed at a later date. Prepping to butcher 4 turkeys before Thanksgiving. Put up lights today too.

Turk is mentally prepping for the big day. One month to live.
