After working through some fear reactivity, we needed some fun!

Working with a German Shepard that has developed fear reactivity. I’m not managing his behavior but instead this is how I was able to manage his energy and patiently waited for him to transition into a calm, submissive state while establishing trust and building mutual respect with him. Then, we went for a bike ride and played in the water.

Tips on training your dog to hike with you:

1. Before you hike with your dog, form a bond. Probably the most important step in the process is making sure your dog considers you his “pack” Take time to build trust and make sure your dog respects and listens to you.

2. Teach the basics. Begin by teaching your dog basic commands inside your house, with little distractions. Your dog needs to have a good recall on the trails. My top tip for training a dog to come is to ALWAYS keep it positive. Even if your dog escapes and runs away from you (which is enough to make anyone stressed and angry) always reward him when he returns. If you yell at him, he’ll associate coming back to you with punishment.
3. Teach your dog’s recall in a safe place. Then increase the level of distractions.
4. Start small. Choose secluded areas that are less trafficked and far away from roadways. Choose secluded areas that are less trafficked and far away from roadways.
5. Don’t rush the process. Many times people try to do too much, too soon. Have fun while developing a stronger bond with your dog and building better communication. Be patient and enjoy the journey.

Unproductive social interactions is likely to lead to a reactive dog, whether the dog has a positive or negative association. Think of it this way: if your child, say about three or four years old, had a positive association with strangers and wanted to say hi and play with every stranger, or go up to pet every dog, it wouldn’t be healthy or safe. Equally bad, if your child was terrified of every stranger and dog because the child had a negative association, that wouldn’t be good either. In human terms, we understand this perfectly, but for whatever reason, we think it’s OK for dogs to go up to every stranger. 🤷🏻‍♀️ This is not healthy socialization and is counter productive.
