September is Animal Pain Awareness Month 🐾
Did you know that animals often hide their pain? Unlike people, our pets can’t tell us directly when something hurts — which is why it’s so important to watch for subtle changes in their behavior, mobility, or activity levels.
Today Dr. Chelsea examined Chief, a sweet pup who came in for left forelimb lameness. His family noticed about two weeks ago that he wasn’t using his leg as much and seemed less active. On exam, Dr. Chelsea noted pain when flexing his shoulder and lameness graded 2/4. X-rays showed no fractures or major abnormalities, so we suspect a soft tissue/muscle injury. The good news is Chief is otherwise healthy (including a negative heartworm test) and with rest, monitoring, and supportive care, he should be back to his happy self soon. 💙
⚠️ Signs your pet may be in pain:
• Limping or stiffness
• Decreased activity or reluctance to jump/play
• Changes in appetite or sleep patterns
• Vocalizing (whining, yelping)
• Hiding or becoming unusually irritable
If you notice these changes, don’t wait — schedule an exam so we can get to the root of the problem. Early detection and treatment can make a huge difference in your pet’s comfort and long-term health.
