I attended the MN Taxidermy show this weekend and the SD taxidermy show couple weeks ago, between wrestling tournaments this year. I've rarely posted about how I've done at shows for several years now. Not that I haven't done well, take last year for example, I received a few more master's state champion titles. Along with judges' choice Best of Show runner-up in SD with my life-size customer Mule Deer and other major awards.
About 8 years ago I moved up to the master's on my own even though I wasn't required. I could have stayed at the professional division to a win a few more blue ribbons/best of categories awards. As my goal was to get a blue ribbon in the toughest to compete in category the Whitetail deer I figured why not. Which the bar continues to get raised higher year to win. I also wanted to do it with basically a wall mount customer deer mount. With only spending a couple extra hours on it mainly the fine inner ear details at the master's level, that a customer would never even look at. As often times taxidermist will spend countless hours more on show deer vs a regular customer mount.
Being I didn't have a recently done customer deer in my shop. Along with I haven't done any mounts for myself except one mount in August since 2016. As I don't get paid to do my stuff and have a bunch of personal things to do. I decided to do put together a deer head for myself for SD. I received best wall deer award in SD and scored another 2nd place ribbon, with score of 89 last few years I've consistently been 86-89 on them since I moved up.
After SD I decided to put together a very special deer. My first and only archery buck and my only velvet buck. I harvested this deer in 2019 right after my dad passed away. Well, this deer is even more special now as it received a blue ribbon with a regular closed mouth wall mount in the masters and masters best wall mount deer award. Which it's been 10+ years since I've seen another taxidermist do at a show I've attended, although a buddy of mine did do it a couple years ago I wasn't able attend in SD. I also received a blue ribbon in masters lg life-size and best bear mount with brother bear mount in MN.
