Hazel and I are both going to sleep well tonight!! After our first trail ride yesterday, I took her to her first show today. I was so impressed with how calm and collected she was around the new horses, sights, sounds and obstacles! She tried everything I asked her to do and thought through every situation, even with never having seen most of those obstacles before.

We started with an in hand class, and then since she was doing so well, I decided to try riding her through the course. For the in hand class, we even placed 3rd! I had a lot of fun with the Prineville Ridge Riders, it was a great supportive environment for Hazel's first show.

With the nice weather, I ended up taking Hazel out for her first trail ride today! It was great exposure to cars, dogs, and other horses. We did some walking, trotting, and cantering through the sagebrush.

I've been working on getting Hazel used to the trailer, and today was perfect weather for her first major outting. I hauled her down to a nearby arena, and she did amazing!

There were so many new noises and sights for her. Driving by were trucks, trailers, motorcycles, Teslas, golf carts, drunk golfers yelling and screaming, and a whole parade of cars with American flags flapping from them. She took it all like a champ and thought through every situation.

She is really making it hard for me to stick to my decision of putting her up for adoption at the end of this challenge 😅😂

Hazel didn't even bat an eye at her first ride, as you can see from the first picture where she's yawning 😂 I can't wait to share more pictures and some updated videos of the progress we've made riding over the last week!

Hazel's got picking up all 4 feet pretty much down! Now on to getting her to let the farrier pick them up, that's another story 😂

Need a step or mounting block to get on? Hazel says no problem! I've been teaching her to come right over to the fence to practice for when it's time to get on her. This will not only make that much more convenient, but also lets her get used to seeing me up above her. This helps simulate what she will see when I ride her for the first time, and let her get used to that and all kinds of noise from up above her, while I remain safely attached to the fence!

My favorite piece of c**t starting advice that I've heard is to try to get bucked off from the ground. I try to do everything I can to get them comfortable to me and the saddle before getting on. I make all kinds of noise, jump up and down next to them, and flap everything around on the saddle, so when you ride them for the first time, nothing is a surprise.

The more things you can get solid on the ground, the less you'll have to deal with when riding, and I'd much rather work through a problem with a horse from the safety of the ground, instead of having them spooking, scooting away or bucking when you go to ride! Hazel has been doing great with it all and is gaining confidence!
