THIS!! Please read. We have to explain this all the time.

I hear this almost every day -

“I buy him so many toys - and all he does is destroy them!”

My response? “And?”

Imagine if I said to you “I buy them such good dog food, and all they do is EAT it!”

It’s the SAME THING.

Dogs are not children. They don’t play with toys the way they do. They are different species and therefore have different needs. They don’t put their toys on shelves and wait to play with them again tomorrow.

Shredding, dissecting, chewing, biting, gnawing, shaking, are all part of behavior diversity in toy play that encourages and gives WELFARE to dogs.

They do not give a hoot or know how much it cost. Or how cute it is. They need to do these behaviors and dog toys are how you prevent them (hopefully) from doing it to your other stuff - that again, dogs understand value of. The dog toy industry has increasingly created toys that are not only expensive but also hold sentimental value to us (coffee cup stuffies or favorite cartoon characters etc) and therefore we are always intervening the destruction process. That needs to stop.

You buy the toys. They destroy them, however they choose. That’s all lumped into the cost of living with another species. They NEED to do these behaviors and suppressing them only causes more problems elsewhere.

Kipper is a shredder and tearer. More than most of my dogs combined. So, I go to goodwill and buy stuffed toys in bulk. He shreds and dissects them, i sit and watch and I throw them away and give him another. I supervise so he doesn’t ingest them, and when I can’t I give him something else like an antler. Does it cost money? Yes. But that is all part of the deal I made when deciding to accept the responsibility of having dogs in my house.

To answer a typical rebuttal I hear "if I let them do that then they will do it to other things, including the ACTUAL kids toys. I hear the same with "if I give my dog people food for treats, he will beg at the table"

I have the opposite experience and many clients do too. By giving the toys I've bought in the context I do, I've had my dogs steal less of the kids toys, and actually WAIT until they are given their "okay to shred" toys. Context can and does absolutely matter to many dogs. The majority of stuffed dog toys today resemble kids toys anyway, so Goodwill toys provide a much cheaper outlet without the feeling of throwing away money for 5 minutes of joy. Cardboard boxes, iceberg lettuce, watermelons etc are all great shredding options too, but they don't replace the true joy for many dogs of ripping an ear off a stuffy.

They eat the food, they shred the toys, they dig the holes, they shed, they bark, they need management, they need training, they need medical care. None of this is their fault. They are dogs. If we look at meeting their basic needs as an inconvenience, then we are already doing them an injustice before we’ve even begun to understand them fully.

Here’s kipper destroying his 3rd squish mallow of the week. Thank god for goodwill.

🚨 ESA Owners Please Read 🚨

There’s been a lot of confusion lately around Emotional Support Animals and housing rights, so let’s talk about what’s going on.

On May 22, the Department of Housing and Urban Development introduced a stricter new policy that narrows the criteria for assistance animals in rental housing. Many people are concerned that these changes could make ESA requests face more scrutiny, more pushback, and more denials moving forward.

The Fair Housing Act still protects individuals with disabilities who need an ESA, but the process may become more difficult for many renters. 💔

So what does this mean for you?

✔️ Your documentation needs to be legitimate and up to date
✔️ Your dog should be well-behaved and manageable in housing settings
✔️ You need to understand how to properly advocate for yourself and your rights

This is where many people start to feel overwhelmed and where we can help. 💙

At Lets Get Pawsitive LLC, we’re here to support you by helping you:

🐾 Build a well-mannered, housing-ready dog
🐾 Feel more confident navigating ESA conversations
🐾 Strengthen your situation with real guidance and support
🐾 Explore service dog training when it may be a better fit for your needs

You do not have to figure this out alone.

If you’re feeling anxious, unsure, or overwhelmed about what to do next, reach out. We’ll help walk you through it.

To every small dog:

You deserve to be treated with the same respect as a big dog. You deserve real adventures, enrichment, training, boundaries respected, freedom to explore, and a life bigger than the couch you sit on.

My heart breaks for the little dogs that are treated like accessories or home decorations. Those carried everywhere, never allowed to just be a dog, and rarely getting the chance to experience the world around them.

Small dogs still have instincts, emotions, needs, and personalities. They deserve walks that let them sniff, confidence building experiences, time outdoors, and people who listen to them instead of laughing off their discomfort.

Being tiny should never mean living a tiny life.

I’ve stopped caring about a lot of the things I used to think mattered with dogs. Things that other people think are important.

Perfect heel positions. Constant eye contact. Dogs loving every person they meet. Looking impressive online. “Off leash proof” goals.

What matters more to me now is that my dogs are happy.

I care more about seeing relaxed body language than robotic obedience. I care more about enjoying our time together than constantly correcting or training every moment.

The older I get, the less interested I am in proving something through my dogs.

I just want dogs that feel safe, enjoy their lives, and genuinely like being with me.

That feels far more important than looking perfect to strangers or social media.

We absolutely love this. ❤️🐾

With so much going on around him, puppy Rocky chose to lay down, relax, and just take it all in. We have to say though that this calmness didn’t happen by chance. His needs are being met, he’s learning how to feel safe in different environments, and he’s been thoughtfully socialized (which is so much more than just saying hi to every person or dog he sees)

Our final puppy class at the park was SO busy, full of other people and dogs, kids playing on a slip and slide, loud adults at a bbq, and more. While I didn’t get a ton of video, I was really proud to capture this moment. Sometimes the biggest puppy win is simply being able to settle and exist calmly in the world. 🐶✨

This is not a judgment post or meant to be mean. We’ve been seeing kids as young as 12 trying to make money as dog walkers, and while we absolutely love that kids want to work with dogs, this can be extremely dangerous even for older teens.

This isn’t just about “bad dogs.” Even friendly dogs can pull hard, panic, react unexpectedly, or become overwhelmed. Walking dogs safely takes knowledge, experience, and the ability to stay calm and know what to do in stressful situations.

Kids often don’t yet know how to avoid risky situations, read dog body language, handle leash reactivity, break up unsafe interactions, or know what to do if an off-leash dog runs up to them. Emergencies can happen very quickly.

We encourage young dog lovers to learn and gain experience alongside a knowledgeable adult first. Studying dog body language is such an important step (and we know a great picture book for this!).

Now elders, children, and animals can be a little safer in Missouri. 💙
This is a huge step forward! Cross-reporting has officially passed and is heading to the governor’s desk. This means that cases of abuse involving animals, children, and vulnerable adults are more likely to be recognized and addressed sooner.
Some States are already using this system, now just let's connect all the States!!
As someone who works closely with animals and families, this kind of protection matters more than words can say.
Thank you to everyone who fought to make this happen!! This is how real change begins 🐾

We did it.

Just moments ago, we passed cross-reporting in the state of Missouri. Animals, children, and elders will be exponentially safer because of this law. All that is left is the governor’s signature.

In order to pass this legislation, we had to agree to it being a three year pilot period. We have no doubt that the evidence will show that cross-reporting needs to be extended indefinitely.

Today, we celebrate.

Thank you to all of you who helped make this a reality. It was a long-fought battle with an incredible coalition of advocates from animal, child, and elder welfare. This victory belongs to all of us.
