We didn't know we had a job opening for an Assistant's Assistant, but Posy was set on being Tiana's *very* close helper for this week's surgery day!

Most of you have met our amazing Vet Assistant, Tiana. In case anyone ever wondered what she does - the photo is just a single moment in time showcasing her incredible abilities. Multi-tasking at it's finest! Taking notes, dog petting, keeping time, responding to texts and emails, goat scratching post, and more.

Ever felt like a dummy? Don’t worry, we sometimes do too - unfortunately we don’t have a cure for the human dum-dum moments. We do have help for the livestock babies, though!

‘Dummy’ babies are those with ‘Neonatal Maladjustment Syndrome’. The classic ‘dummy’ symptoms are the baby being lethargic/weak, failure to nurse (no to minimal suckle response), inability to find the udder, and general lack of vigor.

The ‘Madigan Squeeze’ is a technique of literally squeezing (in a particular manner) the chest of newborn ‘dummy’ babies. The technique was originally used for foals, but we have adopted it (very successfully!) for calves, lambs, and kids. We even had a client recently use the Madigan Squeeze on a 2-week old lamb that was just not thriving - and it worked great!

The Madigan Squeeze is not always a full cure. Generally, when it works, it doesn’t take long for the baby to have more energy, and the suckle response follows quickly - they’re up and nursing in no time!

The following link is to Dr. Furrer’s favorite video showcasing how to perform the Madigan Squeeze (there are plenty of other videos on YouTube): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gh7wqE8RlnA

It’s not just baby season - it’s also the ‘green soupy poopies’ (aka lush green grass diarrhea) season! If animals are just starting to eat new lush green grass, there are no other symptoms and the diarrhea resolves within a few days on its own - we generally aren’t concerned. If there are other symptoms (lethargy, inappetence, etc.) and/or the diarrhea is not resolving quickly - then it’s time to call us. We do love Spring, but sometimes what it brings is unsightly for a few days…!

We hope everyone's week was great! If anyone is wondering what we've been up to, a few of our cases of the week:
---One turkey for Mycoplasma testing
---One cat for urinating inappropriately
---One dog for a mass removal surgery
---One dog for an ear lesion
---One dog for a full workup after the specialist diagnosed bladder cancer
---One cat for vomiting
---One dog for skin issues, bloodwork and 'everything'
---One dog for further workup and palliative care for possible cancer
---One steer calf for evaluation for horn removal
---One cat for her annual vaccines and bloodwork
---Five dogs and two goats - one dog itchy and four dogs for annual exams/vaccines, one goat for limping and the other for annual exam/vaccines

We love our job!

Baby season is in full swing! Which means we are seeing an increased number of emergencies. Lambs, kids and calves as well as their mom’s are needing our help. We are not an emergency clinic or an ER, and we can not guarantee our availability or that we can get to every emergency. We do however do our best while trying to maintain Dr. Furrer's health and sanity. She spent last Friday night, Saturday night, and Sunday night doing her best to save babies and moms. We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we do our best to triage each individual situation - we will continue to do our best to help everyone the best we can!

It's baby season!!! We are sending easy, simple and healthy thoughts to all the farms in Lane County. See the photos (one for calving, one for lambing/kidding) for timing tips and when to be concerned - aka, when to call us. We hope y'all don't need to use the info, but we'd rather a call early in the process than too late!

We can 'testify' it's been a 'testy' week! Up for interpretation, but we took some and left some. All while getting poopy, muddy, losing feeling in our fingers, having good laughs, and maybe a brain freeze or two. Happy Friday!
