After a very long and somewhat traumatic experience with Trinity’s first litter, we finally have our baby! Meet miss Violet. 💜
Warning, long post ahead!
Trinity was pregnant with only a singleton this whole time, which is why we didn’t know she was for sure pregnant until this past week. We had done 2 ultrasounds and didn’t see a thing, so we were convinced she wasn’t. For those who don’t know, moms of singletons will almost ALWAYS have to have a c section, regardless of breed, as these pups are usually very large because they have gotten all the free space and food from mom to grow as big as they want. Well, that’s exactly what happened with Trinity. She went into stage 1 labor Friday night around 11. All went perfect. She started lightly pushing around 10:30 Saturday morning, and intense pushing around 1:30. Up to this point, all perfect and no complications. That’s when things changed. After 2 hours and no puppies, we made the decision to take her in for a c section. Because it was Saturday and we live in a small town, our normal vet doesnt do c sections outside of normal clinic hours, so we had to resort to taking her to a 24 hour triage clinic. We got there at 4:15 and they couldn’t perform her surgery until they took care of the dog ahead of her because his was life threatening. As we waited, they did an xray and that’s when we discovered that there was only one massive puppy and had we not taken her in, both mom and puppy’s lives would be in danger. We ended up waiting for 2 hours before they gave us the option to leave her there and go home to get some rest. We were hesitant because at this point, we didn’t even know if puppy was still alive as it had been so long, so they did an ultrasound to check for us and she had a strong heartbeat! But this didn’t mean she was out of the woods. Pups can have a hard time coming around after c sections, especially those who have already had a hard time in the birthing process. We decided we needed to go home and rest as I was going on close to 36 hours with no sleep and was exhausted. We left and got a call two hours after that around 8:30 that they had just taken her back and also a warning that with singleton puppies, sometimes damage can be done to the uterus and there was a chance she may have to have it taken out. I told them to do what they needed to do to keep her safe. Another agonizing two hours later, after panic, worry and stress, we got the call that she was out of surgery. Trinity was perfectly fine and her uterus was perfect! She was able to keep it and can be a mom again in the future. Puppy was also strong, thriving and already nursing perfectly. And on top of that, Trinity connected to her immediately enen though she was born c section and Trinity was asleep for it. All of the odds were stacked against her and Violet, but everything ended up being just fine in the end. We are so grateful! 💜🐶🐾
