Somatic. What does that mean?
Many folks have no idea what it is that I do when I partner with horses to help humans throw off the heaviness of the past. It sounds unbelievable to some, a fantasy or magic to others, and to some curiosity is sparked but they talk themselves out of asking questions.
So I want to talk about what Somatic means. Somatic means “of the body.”
Traumatic and overwhelming experiences don't just live in our memories. Our bodies can continue to carry the protective responses that helped us survive—tension, bracing, shutting down, hypervigilance, disconnection, or emotions that never had the opportunity to fully move through us.
Somatic work helps us gently reconnect with these body sensations and learn to listen to what our nervous system is communicating. Instead of forcing ourselves to “let go,” we create enough safety and awareness for the body to begin completing what was interrupted.
Horses live in a constant state of calm awareness, if they are out of pain, well-cared for and not in a stressful environment. They notice what is happening around them, and live in each moment. The presence of danger is not just something that comes into their frame, but also something with an intention of harm. They know the difference between a lioness walking to the stream to drink, and a lion that is hunting.
Given this state of being, the horses are very tuned into us when we are interacting with them. They give us feedback, even when we think we aren't "doing" anything . The way that I partner with horses to help humans is very quiet and subtle. We enter into their world, usually a pasture, and simply stand with them. I help my clients simply notice, with judgement or a story.
When the masks come off and the pretense and protection of ego starts to fall away, what emerges is usually vulnerability and hope. A request for help and a foundation within which we can find stability. Kind of like seeking the bottom of the lake when you are swimming with your toes. And the relief you feel when you touch the bottom and can stand on your feet with your head clear of the water.
Learning to trust again is so hard, and yet so important for healing and regaining strength and direction. Nurturing that spark of spirit feels unfamiliar, since we often do a great job hiding it in order to say safe. It literally means standing straighter, shoulders back, relaxing into the moment and breathing in the freedom.
Yes, it is possible to shed the layers of protection and look around, seeing the beauty around you and breathing in joy. Your body wants to be in sync with this freedom, and somatic work creates the space to dance. Creating this freedom with a horse is a gift that they give us when they journey alongside, showing us the way to live life the way we were meant to live it...fully engaged, calm and empowered.
With a horse beside us, we can slow down, become curious, feel what is happening inside, and discover new choices.
Sometimes healing begins not with finding the right words, but with finally being able to feel, move, breathe, release, and reconnect.
That is the heart of somatic healing—and the foundation of EquiSomatic®
