Heat Advisory! Please take extra care of your pets in this heat! Make sure they're kept cool and hydrated. Not only high temperatures, but high humidity can lead to heat stroke since they can't sweat. Be safe!

The cold temps and winter weather are in full force! Please keep your pets safe. ๐Ÿพ

Some reminders for you:
โ€ข Keep pets inside. They can freeze, become disoriented and get lost, injured, or worse.
โ€ข If they must be outside, they need a dry, warm shelter out of the wind and cold with thick bedding and access to fresh, non-frozen water.
โ€ข Check your dogโ€™s paws for cracked or bleeding pads, ice/snow stuck in pads, and chemicals used to treat icy sidewalks.
โ€ข Make sure your pets have their collars with correct information on in the event they get lost in the cold.
โ€ข Steer clear of frozen lakes or ponds that canโ€™t hold your petsโ€™ weight.
โ€ข Outdoor cats can find car engines a good source of warmth, make noise and check under your vehicle before using.
โ€ข Be prepared for power outages with your petโ€™s food, water, and any meds on hand.

Stay warm, everyone!

We wanted to share important information to keep your pets safe from heartworm and ticks all year:

1. Heartworm cases are trending upward across the U.S.

Heartworm infection rates are seen increasing in traditional hotspot areas and in geographic areas where cases have historically been less prevalent.

2. Multiple factors contribute to heartworm spread

Wildlife, such as coyotes, share mosquito populations with pets and serve as excellent reservoirs for parasites. In addition, dogs are often transported or rehomed from areas of high heartworm incidence to areas of lower incidence. Poor compliance with heartworm disease prevention product administration presents another contributing factor.

3. Ticks are expanding geographically

This is due to numerous factors, including climatic conditions and host populations. This exposes more pets to the blood-sucking parasites.

4. Ticks are present year-round

Many pet owners think ticks are only a problem in the summer months, but ticks can be found actively questing any day the temperature rises above freezing. While pets may not need protection every day, they need protection every month, making year-round protection critical.

September 28th is World Rabies Day - a global health observance to raise awareness about this deadly but preventable disease.

In the U.S., rabies is most commonly transmitted to pets by wild animals such as bats, raccoons, skunks, foxes, and in other countries the virus is commonly transmitted from dogs to humans. Four must-know pieces of info:

1. Rabies is the world's deadliest infectious disease.

99% of rabies-related human deaths are associated with dog bites.

2. Rabies vaccination programs significantly decrease incidence in the U.S.

These programs encourage canine rabies vaccination that lead to a dramatic decrease in rabies cases in domestic animals and people.

3. Cat rabies cases far outnumber dog cases in the U.S.

Every year about 400 domestic animal rabies cases are confirmed in the U.S. Of these, nearly 300 involve cats, which typically outnumber dog cases by a factor of 4. Increasing rabies vaccination rates in the feline population could potentially minimize disease spread, and veterinarians can help by education their cat clients about the importance of rabies vaccinations.

4. The U.S. has no national rabies law.

Rabies laws and regulations are established at the state level in most cases and in some jurisdictions, at the city or county level.
