The dog came to you — so why'd he bite when you try to pet him?

A friend asked me: "The dog walked right up to me. I petted him but then he tried to bite me. What did I do wrong?"

Here's the part most people miss. 🐾

A dog coming close isn't saying "pet me."
He's being brave enough to get close — to figure out if YOU'RE safe.

So when your hand comes over his head, you've answered a question he was still asking. And that "sudden" bite? It was never sudden. It was the only word he had left.

The fix is simple:
Let the dog come over. Let them sniff you. You can try to pet, but pet for three seconds or less, then stop and take your hands back.
➡️ If they lean in for more — you're good.
➡️ If they don't — you just became someone that dog can trust.

Coming close isn't "yes." It's "let me check." 💛

Your Puppy Isn't Possessed at 7 PM 🦈

Does your puppy seem perfectly reasonable all day... And then around 7 or 8 PM, they suddenly become:
🐾 extra bitey
🐾 extra zoomy
🐾 extra wild
🐾 unable to listen
🐾 determined to launch themselves at your pants, hands, furniture, and soul

Many puppy owners describe this as the "witching hour."

The good news?

Your puppy probably isn't being naughty. And they're definitely not trying to challenge you.

Just like an overtired toddler gets cranky, silly, and impulsive, puppies often become more mouthy, more excitable, and less able to make good decisions when they're simply running on empty.

Add in a full day of:
🐾 exploring
🐾 learning
🐾 playing
🐾 processing new experiences
And by evening, their little brains can be struggling to keep it together.

When I see a puppy who becomes a tiny land shark every evening, I don't immediately think:
"How do we stop the biting?"

I ask:
"How much sleep is this puppy getting?"
"Do they need more downtime?"
"Are they becoming overstimulated?"

Because sometimes the solution isn't more exercise. Sometimes it's helping your puppy learn how to rest.

Tell me:

Why More Training Isn't Always Better 🐾

Want to know one of the biggest mistakes puppy owners make?

Training for too long.

A lot of people think: "If five minutes is good, thirty minutes must be better."

Not with a puppy. Not with an adolescent dog.

I recommend shorter training sessions. Why? Because learning happens best when your dog is engaged.

Once your puppy starts getting distracted...
Once your adolescent dog starts noticing every leaf, bird, smell, and squirrel in the neighborhood...

You're no longer building success. You're practicing frustration.

I'd rather see:
✅ Three successful 5-minute sessions
than
❌ One exhausting 30-minute session

Keep it fun. Keep it clear.

End while your dog still wants more.

Because the goal isn't longer training. The goal is better learning.

Your adolescent dog probably didn't forget recall.

They discovered competition. Suddenly there are:
👉 Smells worth investigating
👉 Dogs worth watching
👉 Birds worth chasing
👉 Entire environments worth exploring

The cue isn't weaker. The environment got stronger. Instead of asking:
"Why won't my dog listen?"

Try asking: "What is my cue competing against right now?"
That question changes everything.

Adolescence is one of the most challenging stages of dog ownership. Bigger emotions, stronger impulses, and a world that suddenly feels a lot more interesting can make it seem like your dog has forgotten everything you've taught them.

The good news? They haven't.

They need help learning how to focus, disengage from distractions, and make better choices around real-world challenges.

Puppy Nipping Is Frustrating... But Usually Normal

Your puppy is biting:
your hands
your clothes
your shoelaces
your ankles

And you may be wondering:
"Why is my puppy doing this?"

The good news? For most puppies, nipping and mouthing are a normal part of development. Puppies explore the world with their mouths.

They're also:
✔ teething
✔ learning social skills
✔ practicing bite pressure
✔ figuring out how to regulate excitement

And many puppies become even MORE mouthy when they're overtired, overstimulated, or overexcited.

The goal isn't to teach your puppy to never use their mouth.
The goal is to teach them how to use it appropriately.

Why Confidence Matters More Than Socialization Numbers

Many owners think socialization means exposing a puppy to as many people and dogs as possible.

Modern puppy training is shifting toward something different:

Positive experiences.

A puppy who calmly watches the world from a safe distance may be learning more than a puppy who is overwhelmed by constant interactions.

The goal isn't simply exposure.

The goal is helping your puppy learn:

✔ New things are safe
✔ Recovery is possible
✔ Curiosity is rewarding

Confidence grows from successful experiences—not just busy experiences.

That's the foundation of a well-adjusted adult dog.

🐾 Itchy paws? Let's talk about Jill.

Every year, like clockwork, spring rolls into early summer and my girl Jill starts going after her paws. Licking. Chewing. The occasional body scratch. But mostly those paws.

For years, allergy season meant a trip to the vet for an injection just to give her relief.

Then a little over a year ago, I started her on a prebiotic + probiotic powder from Green Paw Wellness. And last spring/summer? The difference was real. Her itchiness dropped noticeably — gut health and skin are more connected than a lot of people realize.

But this year, the probiotic alone isn't cutting it. I saw her chewing her paw again about a week ago. So I added their allergy formula — mixed it into her dinner last night and again in her breakfast this morning.

And here's the part that surprised me: I've already noticed a significant reduction in her paw chewing. After just two doses. 🐾

I'll keep tracking it and report back, because I want to see how it holds up over the next couple of weeks. But so far? I'm encouraged.

Have you ever noticed your puppy seems fine one day and then suddenly:
👉 startles at a loud noise
👉 hesitates around something new
👉 seems unsure in an unfamiliar place

The truth is confidence doesn't mean your puppy is never worried. Confidence is often:
✔ recovering after a surprise
✔ trying again after uncertainty
✔ exploring new environments safely
✔ learning that new experiences can be positive

Because life will always contain surprises.
The goal isn't to eliminate challenges.
The goal is helping your puppy learn: "I can handle this."

That's why I focus on building confidence, focus, calmness, and real-world life skills.

And yes, we also work on the practical skills most owners want:
✔ loose leash walking
✔ coming when called
✔ not jumping on people
✔ polite manners (sit, down, stay)

Because those skills often become easier when a dog feels safe, confident, and better equipped to handle the world around them.

After all, my goal isn't just to help you teach commands.

It's to help you raise a well-adjusted, well-mannered dog who can handle the real world.

"I Didn’t Realize I Was Accidentally Creating Overexcitement in My Puppy"

Your puppy does NOT need to greet everyone.

Because socialization is not:
❌ saying hi to every dog
❌ meeting every person
❌ constant excitement

Good socialization is:
✔ learning to stay calm
✔ observing the environment
✔ recovering from excitement
✔ feeling safe around the world

A puppy who can quietly WATCH the world without overreacting is often far more socially skilled than a puppy who desperately wants interaction with everything and everyone.

Calmness is a skill. It’s one of the most important skills adolescent dogs can develop.

A lot of owners are told to “socialize more” without being shown HOW to help their puppy stay emotionally regulated while doing it.

That’s exactly what we work on inside my From Rambunctious to Well-Mannered Pup group training program:
