Rescued these leghorn babies from an overcrowding situation at the feed store over a week ago....they were literally eating each other, covered in scabs and blood πŸ˜”πŸ˜”πŸ˜” Free chicks are never free....medicine, care, high protein feed, vitamins to help with recovery and shock..... And the work of sorting 50+ chicks according to health level and treating 30+ chicks with bloody injuries.

They had their first day of free ranging today and decided to roost for the first time at 4 weeks old.

When chicks are overcrowded and too warm they become stressed and will start pecking each other to death as young as 3 weeks old. Hopefully they will all start healing up from their tail, neck and wing pecking injuries. The ones with more severe injuries are still in my heated brooder house for another couple of weeks.

A couple of the more cannibalistic chicks had to be culled because they were now only interested in eating their friends and over the course of 24hrs pecked my own babies bare back. Cannibalistic chicks will literally eat a fellow chick from its cloaca while it's still alive from the outside in. πŸ˜”πŸ˜•πŸ˜“

When raising chicks it's always important to remember that space is more important than heat once they reach 3 weeks of age. A brooder box or bin that can comfortably hold 10 chicks at hatch date cannot hold even half that many at age 3 weeks. When purchasing chicks it's hard to envision not having enough room for the tiny fluffy chicks, but chicks nearly double in size every single week until age 6 weeks. They. Need. Lots. Of. Space. They will also begin trying to roost at age 3-4 weeks, so trying to contain babies in an open top box past week 3 starts becoming problematic.

So when you get chicks this year think about where you will keep them once they turn 3 weeks old and don't be afraid to let them move into their grown up digs at age 5+ weeks.

Next on the agenda getting them moved into their bigger pen this week and out of my broody hen pen.

I have some "Rare Ornamental Layer" pullets available

8 weekers

White egg layers

Fourty clucks each

Once grown, these birds make excellent free range/free foraging birds, as they are very resilient and always on the lookout for aerial predators.

Very good feed to egg ratio as they are on the lighter side of large fowl birds.

Almost all of my blue girls have complete lacing. This year my flock consists of 1 splash, 2 black and 6 blues.

These swedish birds are very hardy, moderately friendly and great production layers of green eggs. Because of their small frame they have a very good feed to egg ratio, but the roosters get to be a decent enough size to be a fryer bird. Their combs are straight but not overly large, this makes them less susceptible to frostbite and great in the summer. They need no supplemental heat in the winter, and are the first to return to laying after their molt.
