🐾 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗤𝘂𝗶𝗻𝗰𝘆 & 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻 🐾
These two tiny survivors have already endured more than any kittens ever should, and it’s hard to put into words how heartbreaking it was to discover them in such desperate condition.

Quellen was first brought to our friend Dana with Richland TNR on Tuesday morning after he was found along the road. It was immediately clear that he needed urgent help. We are forever grateful to Dr. Diane at The Vetting Zoo for finding time in her busy schedule to examine him right away. At that point, his eyes were too swollen for a thorough exam, but he was started on antibiotics and eye meds right away, as well as a few other standard intake treatments.
The following evening, a second kitten arrived — little Quincy. His condition was even more critical, and by then we had learned that a third sibling had already tragically passed away. Quincy’s right eye had ruptured from infection and ulceration, causing severe swelling and pain. One of our fosters immediately stepped in with round-the-clock supportive care and an aggressive treatment plan, aimed at keeping both boys comfortable while fighting to save their remaining eyes.
Quincy is also battling a dangerous melting ulcer in his left eye - which is a severe type of wound on the surface of his eye where enzymes break down the the outer layer of the eye so fast that it begins to dissolve. This is extremely painful and can lead to rupture or complete loss of the eye without urgent treatment. Quellen is fighting a significant ulcer in his right eye and early signs of rupture in his left. Both kittens are receiving intensive, round-the-clock care to support their fragile futures. 💕

When Quincy and Quellen were rescued, they were desperately ill with severe eye infections that had already claimed the life of their sibling. Their conditions are the direct result of untreated illness and the lack of medical care available to so many kittens born outdoors. Both kittens have been seen by our vet and will also be seen by a surgeon on Friday.
🔹 𝐐𝐮𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐲’𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧:
• His right eye was so badly damaged by infection and rupture that the globe swelled beyond the eye socket. Much of the inflamed tissue has since fallen away, and this eye will eventually require enucleation (surgical removal) once he is bigger and strong enough for major surgery.
• His left eye has developed a melting corneal ulcer — an aggressive, painful condition where enzymes rapidly dissolve the cornea.
• His treatment plan includes:
• Oral and topical antibiotics
• Specialized EyeQ Amniotic Eye Drops to promote healing and reduce inflammation
• Serum treatments made from canine blood to slow corneal breakdown
• Anti-inflammatories and pain medications
• Three of these treatments must be given every 1-3 hours to have any chance of saving their eyes.
• Prognosis for the left eye is poor, but every effort is being made to preserve it so he will not require bilateral enucleation (removal of both eyes)
🔹 𝐐𝐮𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧’𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧:
• His left eye has a serious ulcer with early signs of rupture. Prognosis for this eye is also poor, and enucleation may be necessary in the future.
• His right eye has a significant ulcer that requires aggressive treatment. Prognosis is guarded, but there is hope.
• He is on the same rigorous treatment protocol as Quincy in hopes of preserving at least some vision.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧?
Kittens born outdoors often suffer from untreated feline herpesvirus or bacterial infections, and their delicate eyes are easily damaged by illness or environmental factors. These problems can escalate quickly into ulcers. Without immediate treatment, ulcers can worsen rapidly causing extreme pain and irreversible damage.
Far too often, rescues are too late to help reverse the damage caused and enucleation is often the only humane option to stop suffering. This is why 𝐓𝐍𝐑 (𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐩-𝐧𝐞𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐫-𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧) and early medical intervention are so vital: they prevent needless suffering like Quincy’s and Quellen’s before it ever begins.

Despite all they’ve endured, Quincy and Quellen are incredibly sweet, resilient babies who still purr and seek comfort. Although neither kitten is able to see, things 𝘢𝘳𝘦 improving. Quellen is starting to show a little s***k as he blindly bounces around his new home. He wants to play so badly, but he is fully reliant on his ears and nose to help him understand his surroundings. Quincy is still more subdued, but he has a few moments each day where he perks up and fumbles around. They’ve already survived so much, and with your support, we can ensure their story doesn’t end like their lost sibling’s.
Whether or not they are able to retain any vision in their eyes, they will be cherished, safe, and loved. We will continue to manage their pain, keep them comfortable, and prepare them for the surgeries they will need once they are big enough.
Please keep these brave brothers in your thoughts as they fight for their future. Their situation is devastating, and with so many critically ill kittens that have come into our care this year, our veterinary and medical costs are higher than ever. If you are able, please consider donating or supporting our fundraisers to help us give Quincy, Quellen, and others like them the chance they deserve. 💌
