If your pet is sensitive to noise, be aware that the Oregon International Air Show will be taking place May 16-18 at the Hillsboro Airport.
Loud planes and unusual noises may cause pets to panic and escape from their enclosures or to bolt away from their owners.
Even pets that have never seemed bothered by loud noises before can develop new fears.
Tips for keeping your pets safe and secure:
• If you think your pet might fear loud noises, call your veterinarian TODAY to discuss medication or other options for reducing your pet’s fear. Doing this now is also good planning for the upcoming Fourth of July fireworks!
• Verify that your pet’s ID tag and microchip have current and updated information, and that your dog is licensed. Double-check that their collar fits well and that any tags are securely attached. If you pet needs an ID tag, many pet supply stores offer in-store pet tag engraving. If your pup needs a dog license tag, we are open Monday through Friday for in-person dog licensing.
• Check your fence and gates. Are there loose or warped boards? Are there spots where your dog or another critter has started to tunnel near the fence? Is the gate closed and latched, and does the gate stay latched?
• Keep your dog on a leash for their potty breaks, even in your own yard.
• Pick a room in your home that can provide a safe space for your pet. You want them to associate the room with good things like treats, cuddles and their favorite bedding. Consider adding soft music, talk radio or white noise to the room.
