2025 TURKEY SEASON:
I am taking a select number of birds this season. I will take 15-20 maximum. I currently have a small backlog from last season as I am not a full time taxidermist. I do quality work at my pace. I am attaching a photo of how to care for your bird upon the shot. A great mount starts at the shot.
Some helpful tips:
Try not to shoot bird in strut
Try to shoot only on head.
Pick bird up by head only
Do not step on neck area
Do not put over shoulder
Do not cram in vest
Treat it delicately
Most important: keep 2 paper towels zip lock and electrical tape in vest. Stuff paper towels in throat of bird. Wrap head in ziplock just above the waddles, then electrical tape the ziplock above waddles. You can tuck the head once wrapped and bagged, under the wing and ease the bird in a garbage bag. Wrap the bag tightly around the bird leaving the folded fan expose outside the bag. ( tips of feet and fan will be sticking out to insure that the fan isn’t crushed). Freeze thee bird whole if you do not get it to me the day of kill. Please do not attempt to cut or cape.
Most important!!! BLOOD IS ACIDIC TO FEATHERS. DRIED BLOOD DAMAGES THE FEATHERS PERMANENTLY. Do your best to wipe the bird down with a paper towel before blood dries on feathers.
I totally understand all or some of these things are unavoidable , but, everything that the hunter does upon the shot, makes a difference in how realistic and preserved your trophy can be. Good Luck and thank you!!
Attached is a diagram of how to prep your bird.
