We are looking for fosters to take in individual adult cats from a rescue earlier this week. These 5 cats have tested negative for FeLV, however they were exposed to a cat in their previous home who did test positive. Our protocol calls for retesting of animals exposed to FeLV 30 days after the initial test to ensure that they truly are FeLV negative.
FeLV can spread by cat-to-cat contact and the virus is shed through bodily fluids. Though possible, it is very rare for transmission to occur through shared surfaces. If you have cats of your own and are interested in fostering one of these cats during their 30-day waiting period, they would need to be housed in a room of their own + have their own food bowls, litter boxes, and litter scoops (which the SQSPCA can provide for those interested). Fosters should make sure to wash hands + change clothes after handling these cats and their items before handling their personal cats as an extra safety measure.
Pictured below is Malcom, one of the cats from the rescue who will be stuck in the shelter while he waits for his 30-day waiting period for his retest unless a foster comes forward.
If you have any questions or are interested in fostering one of these adult cats, please give us a call at 607-547-8111 ext. 115 or shoot an email to [email protected].
