When it’s summer time in Florida, it gets hot for humans— and hot for our furry friends, too. We just took Aivy, our American Eskimo with us to Key West, and she had a great time... but we did pick up some tips you might not think of for your pet in our tropical environment during the summer:

1. Watch artificial wood deck planking and beach sand. When the sun hits them, the temperature can rise high enough that it literally can burn your pet’s paws. You may need to carry your pet there or just avoid that situation.

2. Water, water. High heat means high dehydration. Your pet will need more water, more often, than you think. Take along a collapsible bowl for convenience. At the dog-friendly restaurants in the Keys, they would even bring a disposable bowl with ice cubes in the water— a double treat!

3. Grooming: less hair means potentially lower temperatures for your dog. Summer may be a great time for a cool doggie shave. But remember: double-coat dogs should not be shaved. For them, a solid grooming to comb out extra hair can help keep ‘em cooler.

Summertime is great, and summer vacations, too. We had fun taking Aivy... but if you decide to leave your pet home, rest assured that Doggie Dudes will be there for you, and for your pet, when you need us.
