I’ve been getting a lot of puppy interest lately, courtesy of Bowie going viral… again, lol. While I very much appreciate it, there’s one thing I want to discuss that a lot of people seem to maybe not quite fully understand: the idea of prey drive. It is something that is part of the breed, and is necessary for what I want to do with my dogs, which is working them. However, that drive comes with some caveats.
For example, this is Bowie. Y’all love Bowie. Bowie is sweet, snuggly, cuddly, and absolutely adorable.
He is also officially a criminal this week, by way of him catching and dispatching (and trying to bury) a squirrel.
Now, that doesn’t seem like much, but remember he’s also young, and very, VERY sweet, so I want y’all to keep something in mind: he’s Blue’s son.
Blue, who has jumped four foot fences to chase down, AND CATCH, deer. That 90lb dog can run over 27 mph.
Bowie is on track to surpass his dad in both size and speed. Have you ever held the leash of something like that, when it reeeeally wanted to get something?
Bowie is the product of Blue and Gracie, and while Gracie is incredibly driven, she would never, and has never, murked anything besides her balls. She is also…. Not very smart, lol. If she did catch something, she very likely wouldn’t know what to do with it.
Kinney, the next mama here, is a completely different story. I’m not going to list her victims, but it’s more than a few. She’s lightning fast, exceptionally smart, and has the mass to back it up.
The next litter attempt will be between Blue and Kinney.
Now do you see why I’m being very, very intent on making sure folks understand what I’m talking about?
Don’t get me wrong, they’re both incredible dogs, and will make incredible companions, but I have to be very discerning as to where those puppies are going to go. That is why we don’t do pick your puppy, or reservations at a few days old. Placing the puppy in the best home for the puppy is what is most important here, and that takes time and patience while they grow up a bit and their personalities start coming out.
If that process works for you, I’d love to talk. If it’s not something you agree with or can get behind, then there are other breeders that can more than accommodate you, it’s just not going to be me 😂
