Steps for Broadleaf W**d Control In St. Augustine Lawns

The month of April seems to bring about one common question from homeowners..."How can I eliminate w**ds in my st. augustine lawn?"

Here are 7 simple steps:

1. Maintain proper mowing height
• Mow at about 3–4 inches, which is typically the recommended range for St. Augustine grass.
• Cutting too short weakens the lawn and makes it easier for broadleaf w**ds to take hold.

2. Water correctly
• St. Augustine likes thorough, less frequent watering, typically about one inch per week (depending on rainfall).
• Overwatering can encourage w**d germination; underwatering stresses the turf, giving w**ds a foothold.

3. Fertilize appropriately
• Follow a balanced fertilizer schedule to keep St. Augustine dense and competitive.
• Too little fertilizer stunts grass growth; too much (especially nitrogen) can encourage w**ds and disease.
• Soil tests help identify nutrient deficiencies and guide proper fertilizer application.

4. Hand-pull when w**ds are few
• If only a few w**ds appear, pull or dig them up before they drop seeds.
• Removing w**ds early prevents them from multiplying and protects your lawn’s overall health.

5. Apply pre-emergent herbicide if needed
• A pre-emergent herbicide in early spring can help prevent new w**d seeds from sprouting.
• Look for products labeled as safe for St. Augustine lawns. Always follow instructions carefully.

6. Use the right post-emergent broadleaf herbicide
• When a post-emergent treatment is necessary, choose products specifically labeled for use on St. Augustine.
• Some broadleaf herbicides (e.g., those with 2,4-D) can damage St. Augustine if used incorrectly or at too high a concentration.
• Spot-treat individual w**ds or patches rather than blanket-spraying the entire lawn, unless the label directs otherwise.

7. Maintain lawn health year-round
• Follow best practices consistently—proper mowing, watering, and fertilization—so the turf naturally suppresses w**ds.
• Keep lawn equipment clean to avoid spreading w**d seeds or diseases.

𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗟𝗮𝗺𝗽𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗼𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗲𝘁 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀

Heat lamps are a valuable tool for maintaining the warmth needed to ensure the health and comfort of poultry and pets, especially during colder months. However, improper use can lead to safety hazards, including fires. Follow these guidelines to use heat lamps safely and effectively.

𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗟𝗮𝗺𝗽
Lamp Type: Use heat lamps specifically designed for agricultural or pet applications. Ceramic or infrared bulbs are preferred for their durability and efficiency.
Wattage: Select a bulb with appropriate wattage for the size of the space. Overly high wattage can overheat small areas and pose a fire risk.
Housing and Fixtures: Use fixtures with protective guards and ceramic sockets to prevent overheating and protect animals from burns.

𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴
Height and Distance: Position the lamp at a safe height above animals to prevent direct contact. Typically, 18-24 inches is sufficient, but always check the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Adjust the distance to maintain a comfortable temperature range (95°F for chicks initially, gradually reducing by 5°F weekly).
Secure Mounting: Secure the heat lamp fixture with clamps, brackets, or chains.
Always use multiple attachment points (e.g., chain and zip ties) to prevent accidental falls.

𝗧𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴
Thermometers: Place a thermometer at the animal level to monitor the temperature.
Zones: Create warm and cooler zones in the space, allowing animals to self-regulate their body temperature by moving closer to or away from the heat source.
Adjustments: Be prepared to adjust the lamp height or wattage based on weather changes or animal growth.

𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀
Clear Surroundings: Keep bedding materials such as straw, wood shavings, or paper at least 18 inches away from the heat lamp.
Ensure no flammable materials (e.g., hay, feed bags) are within the vicinity of the lamp.
Inspection: Regularly inspect cords and plugs for wear or damage. Replace any damaged components immediately.
Ensure all electrical connections are secure and moisture-resistant.
Circuit Safety: Use a dedicated circuit to avoid overloading.
Consider installing a circuit breaker or surge protector for additional safety.

𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿 𝗩𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
Ensure adequate airflow in the housing or quarters to prevent overheating and condensation.
Avoid placing the heat lamp in confined, poorly ventilated spaces, which can trap heat and lead to unsafe conditions.

𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲
Bulb Replacement: Replace bulbs as needed, ensuring the new bulb matches the fixture’s specifications.
Fixture Cleaning: Regularly clean the heat lamp and its guard to remove dust and debris that can accumulate and pose a fire risk.
Inspection Schedule: Perform routine inspections of all heat lamp setups to ensure they remain secure and functional.

𝗦𝘂𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻
Daily Checks: Check the lamp and the animals at least once daily to ensure proper functioning and observe for any signs of overheating or distress in the animals.
Emergency Plan: Have a plan in place for emergencies, such as electrical failures or fires. Keep a fire extinguisher rated for electrical fires accessible near the housing area.

𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝗱𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀
Gradually reduce heat lamp use as outdoor temperatures rise or animals grow older and more resilient to temperature fluctuations.
Remove the lamp entirely once it is no longer needed to avoid unnecessary risks.

By following these best practices, you can ensure the safe and effective use of heat lamps in poultry houses and pet quarters. Prioritizing safety and proper maintenance will protect both animals and property while providing the warmth needed to keep your animals healthy and comfortable.

𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘄 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗱-𝘄𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗱𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 primarily because of its natural insulating properties. Each stalk of straw is hollow, creating tiny air pockets that help trap heat. This helps animals retain body warmth and stay comfortable in low temperatures.

Additionally, straw is relatively inexpensive, widely available, and easy to replenish, making it a practical choice for many farms and homesteads. Its structure also allows moisture to drain away from the animals’ bodies more easily than some other bedding materials, helping keep them drier and reducing the likelihood of chills or health issues in cold, damp conditions.

At Conroe Feeders Supply we have plenty of straw bales and bagged straw available to use during this cold spell. Give us a call - 936-756-5549.

𝗦𝗮𝘆 "𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱𝗯𝘆𝗲" 𝘁𝗼 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗮𝘁𝘀!

As temperatures drop, rodents may start looking for warm, cozy places to nest—like your home, barn, or feed storage area. Here are some practical tips to prevent infestations and eliminate them if they’ve already moved in:

𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀:

*Seal Entry Points: Check for gaps, cracks, or holes around doors, windows, and pipes. Use steel wool or caulk to block their entry.
*Store Food Properly: Keep pet food, livestock feed, and human food in sealed, rodent-proof containers.
*Declutter: Remove clutter from storage areas, garages, and attics where rodents love to hide.
*Eliminate Outdoor Attractions: Keep trash cans tightly sealed, clean up spilled birdseed, and trim vegetation near your home to remove hiding spots.

𝗘𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝘅𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀:

*Traps: Snap traps and glue traps are effective, especially when placed along walls where rodents typically travel. Bait traps with peanut butter or dried fruit for the best results.
*Clean Thoroughly: Remove food crumbs, spills, and other attractants.
*Rodenticides: Use bait stations carefully, and always keep them out of reach of pets and children.
*Call a Professional: If the infestation is severe, professional pest control can handle the problem safely and effectively.

We’ve got everything you need to keep rodents at bay—from rodent-proof containers to traps and bait stations. Stop by Conroe Feeders Supply and let us help you protect your home, barn, and feed storage areas.

𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝘁 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝘀 - 𝗖𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘀 - 𝗧𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁

Your enjoying a meal on the patio with friends and you recognize your dog is incessantly licking at what appears to be a wound - over and over and over. You look closer and discover the area he is licking is now red, raw, and sensitive to the touch. This is a familiar scenario for many dog owners, but the first incident is often, understandably, filled with panic.

This is probably a canine hot spot - also known as acute moist dermatitis, where the skin has become inflammed, red, and often moist.

There are a number of possible underlying causes for hot spots. While more common during the summer months, they can be an issue any time of the year based on the underlying cause. Possible causes include:

Flea bite allergies
Food allergies
Insect Bites
Hypersensitivity to various things in the environment
Excessive matting of the hair
Ear infections...and
Behavioral problems

The lesion itself is a reslut of the itch-scratch cycle and it is most often aggravated by continuous licking, biting, and scratching. Home care in the early stages should include clipping the hair away from the lesion, cleaning, and then completely drying the area. Our suggested medication, 𝗩𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘆𝗻 𝗣𝗹𝘂𝘀 𝗛𝗼𝘁 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁 𝗚𝗲𝗹 reduces the inflammation and redness plus provides relief from the insulting itch.

𝗛𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗧𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗣𝗲𝘁𝘀

The holidays are a joyful time, but they can also bring potential risks for our furry friends. Here are some quick, helpful tips to keep your pets safe and healthy this holiday season!

𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱
Emergencies don’t take holidays! Make sure you have the contact info for your vet, an emergency clinic, and pet poison hotlines (ASPCA: 888-426-4435; Pet Poison Helpline: 855-764-7661) readily available. Knowing where to go and who to call can make all the difference.

𝗛𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗙𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆
Holiday treats are for people, not pets! Keep chocolate, sweets with xylitol, and rich table scraps (like gravy, fat, and bones) out of reach. These can cause anything from tummy upset to life-threatening conditions like pancreatitis or choking. If you want to give your pet a treat, stick to options specially made for them!

𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴
Decorations add holiday cheer, but they can be risky for curious pets:
~ Ornaments & Tinsel: Breakable and edible ornaments are hazards; keep them high on the tree.
~ Christmas Tree Water: Avoid additives, as they can be toxic.
~ Holiday Plants: Poinsettias, mistletoe, and holly may look festive but can be toxic. Opt for pet-safe plants or keep them out of reach.
~ Lights & Cords: Pets might chew cords; unplug lights when you’re not around to supervise.

𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗺 & 𝗖𝗼𝘇𝘆 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗗𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀
With all the noise and excitement, holiday parties can be overwhelming. Give your pets a quiet room to retreat to if they get nervous. And watch doors during comings and goings – a pet could make a quick escape! Make sure they’re wearing up-to-date ID tags or have a registered microchip just in case.

𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗨𝗽 𝗦𝗰𝗿𝗮𝗽𝘀 & 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗵
When the feast is over, make sure to clear food off tables and counters and securely dispose of trash. Bones, fat trimmings, and festive wrappings can all be tempting – and dangerous – for pets. A covered trash can or taking the garbage outside will keep them safe.

𝗧𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗣𝗲𝘁𝘀
If you’re traveling with your pet, plan ahead! Pack essentials like food, meds, and ID. Make sure they’re safely secured in the car and never leave them alone in the vehicle. For air travel or boarding, consult your veterinarian about vaccines and any specific travel needs.

Let’s make this holiday season merry and bright – and safe – for everyone in the family!
Call us (936-756-5549) or stop by Conroe Feeders Supply for pet-safe treats, cozy pet beds, and more essentials to keep your pets happy and healthy this holiday season.

𝗣𝘂𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗩𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 - 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻

Vaccinations are a vital part of preventative healthcare, especially for puppies. It’s important to understand the rationale behind when and why we give vaccines.

𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘃𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼𝗴𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗸.

The initial 5 way vaccine should be given to puppies when they are 6–8 weeks of age. Two booster vaccines are then given approximately 3 weeks and 6 weeks after the initial dose. These boosters are essential as immunity provided via the mother’s milk may decrease the reliability of the early vaccination. Additional vaccinations are ginven annually after that.

We can actually give the vaccinations to your puppy without requiring an appointment. Our vaccination schedule:

First Vaccination - Canine 5 Way - Distemper, Adenovirus Type 2 (Parainfluenza) and Parvovirus Vaccine.

Second Vaccination - 3 weeks later - Canine 9 Way - Same diseases as the Canine 5 Way plus the four strains of Leptospirosis.

Third Vaccination 3 weeks later - Canine 10 Way - Same diseases as the Canine 9 Way plus Coronavirus.

Rabies vaccination must be given by a Veterinary Clinic - Vip-Pet Care provides this service at our storre. Please call for the next scheduled Clinic - 936-756-5549.
