I'm going to be honest and absolutely transparent. We are new to this. We are starting out and things are a mess. We are learning a lot and by that I mean failing a lot. We have had some wins, but the losses hit harder.

Homesteaders did you question your sanity at the beginning? What trials and errors did you encounter and how did you push past those obstacles?

Lastly, was it worth it.

We picked up some Americaunas. We will have our incubator full to the max of the cochin, brahmas and silkies so decided on live chick Americaunas instead of hatching eggs. We have a random Americauna rooster that's super sweet so we wanted to get him some companions because once we separate everyone by breed he would be alone ❤️ 🐣🐤

We are already thinking about Spring 2026 🌱

We will soon be hatching Large Fowl Blue Cochin. These are out of successful show lines and being shipped in from across the country.

And Isabel Brahmas. I have always loved Brahmas and have always wanted Isabel and they are so hard to get a hold of, so again coming to Michigan from another part of the county.

And lastly a mix match of show quality silkies also from another state. I know we have excellent silkie breeders in Michigan and I still may add some more of their lines but I wanted to bring in some new things too.

If all pans out, as shipped eggs are a massive gamble and ZERO of my last batch I bought actually hatched, I may have some baby chicks to sell so that you can also be ready for the spring!

Welp... We walked into another surprise last night. Another litter was in our makeshift run. We were scrambling to get mom and babies out so that the 4ish week olds don't hurt these littles. I do have a couple hutches that I've been acquiring and had been trying to figure out who should go in them first, but hadn't yet decided. My worry is if all the females give birth at the same time it's going to be.... Crazy.

We have moved the Buck into another hutch so while the females may all be bred right now, they won't be rebred. We are hitting the pause button until we get this under control!

Stay tuned because after everyone grows out we will be whittling big time! I won't completely get rid of these lines but I do want to make room for some pedigreed/ possibly show rabbits. And when you go from a massive colony enclosure to stacking cages/ hutches we will be much more limited. I wish the colony thing had worked out, but I'm glad to be moving forward. One of the good things that will come out of this will be having tamer rabbits as they will be more accessible to handling. Resulting in being handled more regularly.

❤️Hopefully these little ones make it, having to move them was pretty nerve racking.❤️
