Working on steadying young max up. At a full 7.5 months old, he is progressing like he should.

Max is our last started dog. Today we work on some steady drills. In this series, he broke at the end, but we got two small successful hand castings from him. At a full 7.5 months old, it’s all about piecing the small things together and being patient. I believe at this age, we are working with a 5 year old child’s mentality. Putting the brakes on a young pup too fast and too hard is never a good idea.

There’s always a transitioning period between training and hunting. We do everything we can, to reduce the amount of birds it takes before the dog starts relating the foundational training to the hunt. For most of our started dogs, it takes 5-25 birds and 3 hunts. Once the dog’s “light bulb” comes on and the hunting instinct kicks in, the dog’s drive will increase 10-20%. It’s amazing to watch!

Max is one of our prettiest puppies and I am finally seeing what I have been looking for in him. He is getting stronger everyday. He’s almost a full 7 months old and will be ready for a hunting family in the middle of July.
