Bacchus with Eli, the Irish Wolfhound, on a post Christmas Day hike.

Happy to see that Eliโ€™s owner has maintained his training from earlier this year.

I support dog friendly stores like ๐Ÿถ This little dude belonged to an employee and accompanied us around the store.

Dog owners: Be respectful of stores that allow dogs inside and donโ€™t ruin this cool policy for others. Do not take your dog into these stores if your dog has no training or is reactive and you cannot manage the dog or have poor handling skills.

One good reason to carry bear spray when going to parks where many untrained and uncontrolled off-leash dogs are. Get your dog off-leash trained and go to places where hikers, mountain bikers, and trail runners frequent. An uncontrolled pack of dogs can very dangerous.

One of the top functional behaviors every well trained off-leash dog should learn at some point โ€” the distance down.

I teach a functional heel to clients. I donโ€™t teach โ€œloose leash walkingโ€ normally defined as dog can do anything but not pull as the primary mode for walking with your dog. If your dog is not off-leash trained yet and you want to let your dog take a break to their business or sniff around for a bit, thatโ€™s where essentially loose-leash would come into play. Let the dog explore a bit but not pull you.

What I see a lot with loose leash walking is a dog reverting to pulling as well as zig zagging in front of the owner. This is a dog that has forgotten about their owner and is confused as to what their proper position is.

Itโ€™s much much more
clear to ask for a position for your dog next to your leg. Your dog does not need to be staring up in your face like you see in competition trials. Dogs have excellent peripheral vision and just like you and friend can walk next to each other on a hike without staring at each other โ€˜s face the whole time, so can dogs and they have the advantage of better peripheral vision.

Get your dog off-leash trained and allow him to explore. When other dogs, horses, and people are approaching ask for a heel on either side of you. Forget the loose-leash walking nonsense some trainers espouse like letting your dog pull you around on a sniffari during your whole walk. There needs to be balance and clarity in the relationship with your dog.
