It’s time to hit the drills again to tighten up the casting discipline of both the young dogs and the more experienced dogs!!! This was today’s drill, the V drill. This is great for dogs that are digging back on their angle casts and it also gives you the option to cast straight back to the short pile. The short middle pile is marked with a white cone and the angle piles are unmarked. This creates suction to the short pile which gives us the opportunity to teach young dogs to cast off of suction or keep the more experienced dogs honest on their casting discipline. A few sessions on this drill and you will be surprised how much tighter they will run their blinds in the field!!!

We had a great spring APLA hunt test season!!! We ended up passing 29 of 30 in master and 2 for 2 in certified!!! We added a couple more 4XGMPR dogs to the list and received passes towards a few more 4XGMPR titles for dogs that will finish up this fall hunt test season!!! A huge thank you to all of our amazing clients that trust us and allow us to build their versatile retrievers!!! We can’t thank you enough!!! It’s time to start preparing for this fall!!!

We haven’t ran a land/water setup for awhile so we decided to throw one at them today! Wind was light and variable so not much of a factor. We were also running off of a 6 foot tall mound. The left bird was thrown across the channel onto the point to help set up the blind and was around 60 yards. The right bird was around 100 yards thrown slightly angled in from right to left behind 2 cover changes. The grass is getting tall so they are having to stay in the area of the fall and dig them out. Their perseverance was tested on this mark. The blind was the real test of this setup. At 80 yards, distance wasn’t much of a factor but what we lacked in distance, we made up for on the technical difficulty. To really challenge the line, it puts your dog in danger of wrapping the point/gunning station and getting out of sight. The mark was also a big factor creating suction to the right of the line which makes you start casting your dog to shore to challenge the line which in turn gives the dog the opportunity to make a poor decision by getting out of the water and refusing to get back in. For the most part, it went well and we had a lot of fun with it!

Sprig pinning a long bird off of a mound on his first attempt a couple of days ago!!! I can’t express how much I like this young boy!!! His appeal isn’t just out working, he is Henley’s best friend in the house!!!

It was water blind day for the master dogs!!! It took an hour per dog to get these 5 blind concepts correct but it being 90 degrees outside, the dogs and I were both good with it!!! I was also able to get good angle casts off of a couple points on this setup. Another fun day on the water!!!

Stretching the young dogs out a little bit today. Also, we are running off a mound to give them that look as well! That heavy crosswind was a major factor today but we worked through it and everyone finished strong! These were ran as singles and finished up with a double once the dogs overcame the factors. The blind up the middle didn’t give us too much trouble but it is a good way to get young dogs to take the initial line we are giving them instead of wanting to take the line to the marks that they just ran.
