🦆 Meet the newest members of the herd .. or flock! 🦆

These two adorable youngsters arrived at Virginia Farm Animal Sanctuary today and are settling in nicely. At around eight weeks old, we believe they're likely Mallards, though we'll know more as they continue to grow and show off their adult feathers.

Like so many animals who come through our gates, they're starting a new chapter filled with safety, good food, and plenty of opportunities to just be ducks. 💙

We're looking forward to watching these little quackers grow up and discover all the best mud puddles, shady spots, and snack opportunities the sanctuary has to offer.

Sometimes the smallest members of the family have already overcome the biggest challenges. ❤️🫏

Our youngest donkey resident, Chitto, is spending a few days at Virginia Tech's Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center in Northern Virginia for hernia surgery.

Poor little guy isn't even two years old yet.

Chitto's story started with hardship. At just a few days old, he was dumped at an auction. Thanks to some amazing people who stepped in, he received the medical care he desperately needed and spent nine days at an equine hospital. During his first six months, he made many trips to veterinarians while dealing with developmental issues.

When Chitto came to us at six months old, we knew there was a possibility that he might continue to face challenges as he grew. In many ways, the timing of this wasn't a complete surprise. Around two years of age can be a milestone for young geldings, and if developmental problems are going to appear, this is often when they do.

Still, knowing something might happen never makes it easier.

Chitto isn't just another donkey here. He's our resident ambASSador. He follows the farrier and veterinarians around during their visits, checks on everyone, and somehow always seems to know when another donkey needs a little reassurance. He takes his self-appointed job of keeping order very seriously. ❤️

We're staying just a few minutes away so we can visit him and be ready to bring him home as soon as he's cleared to leave. If all goes well, we hope to bring him home in just a few days.

Please keep Chitto in your thoughts and prayers and send some extra healing wishes his way for a smooth surgery and a quick recovery. We know this little guy has overcome a lot already, and we're hopeful he'll soon be back home where he belongs.

Meet Braveheart.

Not all of the stories at VFAS are happy ones. The reality is that some begin with heartbreak.

Braveheart lost both of his ears after being attacked by dogs. The physical wounds have healed, but like many animals who arrive at our sanctuary, his journey has required much more than medical treatment. It has taken time - Time to feel safe. Time to learn that not every human will hurt him. Time to trust again.

We don't share stories like Braveheart's to tug at heartstrings. We share them because they are the reality of rescue. Many of the animals who find their way to VFAS require extensive veterinary care, rehabilitation, and ongoing support. Their needs don't end when the emergency is over.

While stories like Braveheart's break our hearts, they also remind us why this sanctuary exists.

We can be the safe place.

We can be the place where fear is replaced with security, where wounds are treated, and where animals are given the time and patience they deserve.

But we can't do it alone.
