Color Their World -The Rainbow Chop Bowl - Day 2- Today's colors: YELLOW & ORANGE.
A fresh, colorful chop in your bird’s bowl is a sure sign of a healthy, varied diet. Fresh vegetables and herbs are the most important but fresh fruit can offer many nutritional benefits. Because fruit is high in sugar, it should only comprise a small portion of your fresh chop and be served as unripe as possible. When not peeling, wash your veggies and fruits to remove any residue.
YELLOW & ORANGE veggies are high in vitamin A, carotenoids, and potassium. Carrots, sweet corn, yams/sweet potatoes, butternut squash, pumpkin, golden beets, yellow and orange peppers, and yellow wax beans, are all great examples of yellow/orange veggies. (Note: we slightly soften yams, squash, and pumpkin in the microwave and peel and cool before serving in our chops.)
Fruits add a variety of nutrients and antioxidants when added in moderation to fresh vegetable chop. Modern fruit grown for human consumption contains far more sugar than wild varieties. Birds are not adapted to process the sugar in our grocery store fruits, and in the wild, they do not wait for fruit to ripen before eating it. Therefore, use green, unripe fruit in your mix! Some suggestions include banana, papaya, green apple (without seeds), mango, peeled kiwi, and cantaloupe. Oranges are ok in moderation – if you don’t peel it the skins should be washed (some birds like to shred them for enrichment and they do have vitamins and minerals) and remember: less ripe = less sugar.
