Grounded Horsemanship

Grounded Horsemanship Are you GROUNDED? Groundwork is the foundation for any successful relationship with a horse, in our humble opinion. Not everyone will be, and that’s OK.

Our Grounded Horsemanship program is just that, instruction in the basics of groundwork, leading up to the more complex! Whether you've been riding your entire life, are just starting out, or are looking to get back into horses after some time off, it's all the same to start here... on the ground. We work through the basics, learn how to be present (in an often chaotic world). You will learn how t

o move your horses feet & gain their respect, and that's just to start... There is no timeline, this experience is different for everyone & is based on several factors, the most important one being your personal progress. Once your basic groundwork is where it needs to be, you have the option to continue doing groundwork sessions to advance your skillset, or to move into the saddle with one of our trainers and further your journey with the horse you have been working with. Once she signs you off in the saddle, you then have the option to lease the horse you have been working with, but there is never any pressure to do so. There is an evaluation session before being put on the waitlist for this program, just to make sure we are a good fit. We are all in different places (different needs, different energy, different goals). So, we do an assessment session to meet & see how you do with the horses, and to make sure this will be a good situation for everyone from the start. If interested in learning more, please feel free to send us an Email at [email protected] (please dont message this page, as Facebook doesnt usually notify us and we dont want to miss you). We will discuss your goals via email & if it sounds like you would be a good fit for our program, we set up the evaluation session. If not, we know a lot of trainers in the area we can refer you to and hope to be able to connect you with someone who will be a great fit for your needs.

Self-care isn’t a luxury or something you squeeze in “when you have time.” It’s a way of returning to yourself when life pulls you in a hundred directions. Taking time for yourself can look different depending on the day. Sometimes it’s quiet stillness, feeling your breath slow down, letting your nervous system settle. Other times, it’s active: moving your body or choosing nourishing food. The point isn’t what you do — it’s that you choose you and do it!

We are big on groundwork and being grounded here at Leatherman Lane. Both for our humans & our horses. For our humans, being grounded means coming back into the present moment and reconnecting with your own center. It’s noticing your feet on the ground, the rise and fall of your breath, the thoughts in your mind without judging them. When you ground yourself, you create space between you and the stress around you, which helps you respond rather than react.

As we are near the close of another year, and are preparing to move into a new one, Leatherman Lane is excited to share more of our self-care offerings with you! We hope to encourage everyone to make themselves a priority moving forward, whether here with us or in your own home. Not next year, but today, right now, and to take that practice into the new year as a new routine. Taking time for yourself isn’t selfish, it’s how you stay connected, balanced, and able to show up fully in your life. It’s how you remind yourself that you matter, too.

Self-care, at its core, is permission.
Permission to rest.
Permission to slow down.
Permission to say “no.”
Permission to prioritize your well-being without guilt.

We invite you to join us for group or individual self-care sessions here at the farm, including but not limited to:
Yoga
Forest bathing
Breathwork
Tuning forks & chakra work

Please send us an email at [email protected] with questions and to schedule your self-care session here today!

🤎🤎🤎THIS 🤎🤎🤎 If you cannot commit to doing the small things, I do not believe you will ever get to the big things. At least not with ease, consistency, and a level of enjoyment most of us seek. This is worth a read for anyone in a hurry to "get to the next step" without recognizing the importance of doing the small steps often and well first.

There’s an old saying, often attributed to Zen philosophy, that goes:
”Before enlightenment, chop wood, carry water. After enlightenment, chop wood, carry water.”
At its core, this phrase reminds us that growth doesn’t come from grand, dramatic moments but through the quiet repetition of simple tasks. In horse training, this wisdom applies more than ever.

It’s easy to focus on the end goal—the polished movements, the seamless transitions, or the picture-perfect ride. But the path to that goal isn’t paved with sudden leaps forward. Instead, it’s built one small step at a time—teaching a nose target, refining a halt, or practicing a soft yield of the shoulders.

The Power of Small Tasks
When we work with horses, each moment spent practicing the basics—standing quietly at the mounting block, pausing to check balance, or resetting posture—lays another brick in the foundation. It may not feel like progress in the moment, but these actions accumulate into habits, trust, and skill.
Chopping wood and carrying water aren’t glamorous tasks, yet they sustain life. In the same way, walking your horse over poles, repeating a yield, or revisiting a simple flexion sustains the learning process. It creates rhythm and reliability, grounding both you and your horse.

No Magic, Just Practice
Training isn’t magic; it’s the art of showing up and doing the work consistently. It’s not about sudden transformations but about small, steady adjustments that eventually lead to something remarkable. Horses thrive on this kind of consistency, where each day builds upon the last.
So the next time progress feels slow, remember the saying. Chop wood, carry water. Keep showing up.
Do the small things well.

Sometimes, doing something, looks an awful lot like doing nothing... especially in our Grounded Horsemanship program!

But here, we celebrate the wins (both big and small)! We work through the hard, we don't quit, we cry when we need to, we adjust when & where necessary. We learn, we grow, we thrive!!

To you, this probably looks like 2 women just going through a gate a million times. To us, this looks like progress, this looks like a win, this looks Ike the start of something beautiful, and today we're celebrating that!! 🫶🥂

Learning & Relaxation is always the goal... we achieved both in this session (as did the neighbors)
