Happy Mother’s Day to all of the Mamas at CVH that pour their heart and soul into caring for others, only to go home at night and then give their all to their families! There is nothing like a Mother’s love and whether caring for human babies or babies with paws and claws, these amazing Moms do it with such grace and elegance! We are proud to have them on our team and so thankful to have their families as part of ours!

We hope all of the Mamas out there had a wonderful day today! Happy Mother’s Day from the entire crew at CVH! 💐

Trying to get a still picture of a basket full of puppies is about as hard as a Monday morning after a holiday, but these cuties made this Monday not so bad after all! 🐶🐾❤️

(For your viewing pleasure, the sound is muted to prevent everyone from hearing our crazy “hey puppy, look this way!” voices and sounds! 😂)

Thank you to Jackson County Animal Control for all you each do daily. CVH appreciates you!

For quite some time now we have had a vision to do Q&A sessions regarding some of the most frequently asked questions we hear in the exam room and some of the common misconceptions surrounding vet med. Today, that vision comes to fruition in our first ever post! This week, the dreaded Heartworm conversation. Next week, maybe your suggestion! We encourage clients and our community to ask questions on our social media pages for us to use as our next topic. But for now, keep reading for all you need to know about heartworms, check out the map from the American Heartworm Society that is attached below, and take note of just how saturated the area we live in is! 😳

🐾 Heartworm Disease: What Every Pet Owner Should Know 🐾

Q: What is heartworm disease?
🦟 Heartworm disease is a serious—and potentially fatal—condition caused by parasitic worms that live in the heart, lungs, and blood vessels of affected pets. It’s transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito.

Q: Which pets are at risk?
🐶 Dogs are the most common hosts, but cats and even ferrets can be affected. Because mosquitoes can enter homes and are active in warmer months, every pet is at risk—indoors or out.

Q: What are the symptoms?
❤️ Early stages often show no signs. As it progresses, dogs may develop a cough, fatigue, weight loss, and heart failure. Cats may show coughing, asthma-like attacks, vomiting, or sudden collapse.

Q: Can heartworm disease be treated?
💰 Yes, but treatment can be costly, lengthy, and hard on your pet’s body. Prevention is much safer, simpler, and more affordable. (Did you know: Heartworm treatment typically comes with a hefty price tag, often ranging from a $1,200-$1,600 estimate!)

Q: How can I prevent it?
💊 Monthly heartworm preventatives (oral, topical, or injectable) are the best protection. At CVH, we’ll help you choose the right option for your pet and lifestyle. (Did you know: Heartworm prevention can be purchased monthly, biannually, or even yearly. Doses range in price, but most dogs can be treated for ~$160.00 per year depending on their size! That is ~$13.00/month, or just one trip to Starbucks!)

Q: When should I start prevention?
🌡️ Year-round prevention is key—even in cooler months—because mosquitoes can survive indoors and in fluctuating climates.

Q: Does my pet need a test?
💉 Yes! Dogs should be tested yearly, even if on prevention. This helps ensure compliance and efficacy.

While we hope the forecast is wrong, the closer we get, the scarier it seems to get. 🌪

We strongly encourage our clients and community to have a safety plan in place for all indoor and outdoor pets Saturday night. We do have boarding availability at both locations at this time for any companion animals that may need a safe place to stay this weekend.
