It's no secret that Texas is in an animal welfare crisis. There are a lot of nuanced conversations to be had about the ethics in animal welfare, which is a topic I am very passionate about, but that is how these girls landed here.
A small rural shelter is overrun, and they were surrendered for owner requested euthanasia due to a housing issue. We're not going to talk about housing and pets right now. The original owner's circumstances are none of anyone's business, and with the world feeling like it is falling apart, that's not the topic to be had here.
Instead, I'll leave it brief. The shelter asked if we could give the girls a shot, otherwise they would be euthanized for space quickly. With a few runs open, knowing that both dog were friendly and would not require much in the way of wellness care to get them to an adoptable status, we agreed to come pick them up.
Introducing out LAST intakes for Redstone until we have adoptions: Sasha and Cleo.
These girls are littermates and once their quarantine is completed we will be splitting them up. Either one will stay in the new kennel building and one in the old building, or they will be on opposite sides. Regardless of where we house them, they have to be separated in different play groups.
Littermate Syndrome is no joke, and at nearly 9 months old these girls should have been separated months ago. We are seeing some signs of potential issues if they remain together. Not all littermates end up with LMS, but it is a significant concern.
The girls will need to be spayed and they need a rabies vaccine. They have their other core vaccines, we have dewormed them, they have been microchipped, and they are starting heartworm/flea/tick prevention. Once they are spayed in mid September, they will be up for adoption to SEPARATE homes.
We cannot stress this enough, these girls will not be adopted to the same home. They need separated to truly thrive.
