⚠️ Have you ever seen one of these?
Today, one of our receptionists found a kissing bug on her dog, Kitzy, and brought it to Lindner Animal Hospital for identification. While not every kissing bug carries the parasite that causes Chagas disease, finding one on your pet is a good reminder to stay alert. As a precaution, Kitzy will be tested for Chagas disease in 3 weeks, according to our veterinarian's recommendations.
What is Chagas disease?
Chagas disease is caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, which can be carried by kissing bugs. Dogs most commonly become infected by eating an infected kissing bug or through contact with the bug's infected f***s.
Signs of Chagas disease may include:
🪲 Lethargy
🪲 Loss of appetite
🪲 Fever
🪲 Weakness
🪲 Exercise intolerance
🪲 Heart rhythm abnormalities or other heart disease
Some infected dogs never show signs of illness, while others can develop serious heart disease months or even years after infection.
How can you help protect your pets?
✔️ Bring pets indoors at night whenever possible.
✔️ Reduce outdoor lights that attract insects.
✔️ Remove brush, woodpiles, and debris where kissing bugs may hide.
✔️ If you find a suspected kissing bug, avoid handling it with your bare hands and contact your veterinarian if your pet may have been exposed.
