Vet assistant Aggie and UGA College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences student worker Piper got to try their hands at preg-checking beef cattle this month while in the truck with Dr. Chamlee! This was Aggie’s first time handling the ultrasound probe, and she calls it a “yeehaw of a time”!

“It was very fun,” she says. “I caught on quick ‘cause Dr. Faith is such a great teacher!” 🖤

The CLS vet assistants get a ton of hands-on experience, and not just in assisting the vet they’re riding with on any given day. Their job includes recordkeeping and data entry, keeping the trucks stocked and equipment sanitized, being the second pair of hands at an appointment, and stepping in during procedures as needed. Much of their job training is a guided sort of toss to the wolves, and the CLS team is so lucky to have Aggie, Lexi, and Cheyenne with us every day!

Our student workers and externs are assigned similar responsibilities based on their experience and career goals. We had a summer packed with ride-alongs, and look forward to seeing and teaching more aspiring large animal vets as this school year begins.

☔️ Rain, rain, go away; come again another day — preferably one when we aren’t working cattle. 😉

All of the CLS vets and vet assistants have gotten a little muddy and soggy the past few months. Dr. Goggans and Dr. Chamlee captured these photos after one particularly memorable rainy day appointment. Good luck figuring out what’s mud and what’s manure that got Jackson Pollock’d all over their Uddertechs! 💩

She and Dr. Chamlee had some fantastic help castrating five show goats. These future veterinarians loved getting to observe their goats while they recovered post-procedure, making sure their breathing and heart rate stayed stable and they woke up in an appropriate amount of time.

When the electricity in the barn’s being a little bit finicky, Dr. Chamlee turns to the vet truck to power up the 🔬 scope during a bull breeding soundness exam!

A major part of the BSE is collecting and testing semen to ensure that the bull is producing normal, active s***m cells. The semen is collected in a sample cup, then examined under the microscope to check for motility (movement) and morphology (shape). If the bull’s semen shows at least 30 percent appropriate movement and 70 percent normal appearance, then the bull passes his BSE. He can then be turned out into the field for natural breeding service.

🌟 CLS vets recommend breeding soundness exams be done 30 to 60 days prior to breeding season. Are your bulls in need of an updated BSE? Give us a call to get on our calendars!

Vet assistant Cheyenne got these awesome photos of Dr. Anders and Dr. Strickland tag-teaming on this “sidewall” — or c-section — procedure a few days ago!

This calf’s sire has fathered some large calves in the past, but unfortunately due to their size and resulting dystocia, none of them made it. Knowing this, our farm clients gave CLS a call when they noticed signs of labor, so they could ensure this calf would make it. 🖤 The baby came out beautiful and Mama got sutured up nicely. We know not every calving story winds up this way, so it was wonderful to have such a happy ending for all parties involved!

Just about the only predictable thing about a Georgia summer is that it’s gonna be 🔥 HOT and 💦 HUMID.

These two factors can combine for a whole host of heat-related health problems in livestock. Though it may be easier for small herd farmers, livestock nonprofits, and pet livestock owners to watch individual animals than it is for our larger production outfits, the CLS vets encourage Georgia producers to be mindful of symptoms to the best of their abilities.

Heat stress can result in animal death, fetal loss, poor semen quality, reduced conception, decreased milk production, low carcass quality, and other concerns. For ideas on ways to reduce the instance of heat stress on your farm, scroll back on our feed to the photo of a bull stepping into a pond!

🫶Teamwork makes the dream work, pig ultrasound edition!

Dr. Chamlee was called out to check on the pregnancy status of a KuneKune female. While she operated the ultrasound probe and interpreted findings, the pig’s owners kept the patient distracted with back scratches and treats, and UGA undergraduate student Trey assisted with holding the ultrasound machine.

The KuneKune in question had missed a heat cycle, but there were no piglets see on the screen. Dr. Chamlee asked for continued monitoring of additional pregnancy symptoms, since it was possible the ultrasound was scheduled too early to detect any developing fetuses!

Our marketing director, Dallas, is on vacation this week, and though she’s got the 🌊 Gulf of Mexico at her feet to keep her cool in this sweltering summer heat, she knows that’s not the case for CLS livestock patients! Heat stress can show up with elevated breathing rate, open-mouth breathing, excessive drooling or foaming, abnormal standing and/or restless behavior.

Some ways you can ensure your animals keep their temperatures regulated:
💧 Provide additional access to clean, cool drinking water
🐖 For pigs, provide separate, designated areas for drinking water and wallowing.
⏰ Avoid working animals outdoors if possible. If necessary, work livestock in the early morning hours and use low-stress handling techniques.
🌾 Feed animals during cooler parts of the day with high-quality, easily digestible feed.
😎 Ensure animals have adequate access to shade, such as pastures with trees, covered open shelters, or a barn.
🪭 Provide cooling mechanisms, such as outdoor-safe fans, air conditioning, or a misting system in standing structures.
❗️ Resist the urge to use sprinklers in the middle of a high-temperature day, as this can affect animals’ abilities to regulate their temperatures.
💈 Make sure animals are properly groomed, as too much hair or fleece can make them more prone to heat stress.

In addition, your vet may recommend rescheduling certain non-emergency or non-urgent appointments, such as teeth floating, to a day or time when livestock will have better access to ventilation post-procedure, or when the temperature outside has cooled. This is because sedation can affect an animal’s ability to regulate their temperature on their own.
