The National Association of Social Workers Ohio Chapter stands in deep solidarity with our colleagues, communities, and the people of Minnesota as we mourn the killing of Renee Nicole Good, a woman shot and killed in Minneapolis by federal agents. No community should have to witness violence. The trauma reverberates far beyond one neighborhood- affecting families, children, schools, and everyone who believes in dignity, safety, and human rights.

This Violence Is Not an Isolated Event
We have horrific video documenting Renee’s death- a wrenching and undeniable record of harm. While this moment has drawn national attention, we must also name the larger truth: this is not the only death. It is not the only violence. People are harmed and killed by immigration enforcement every single day in ways that are not captured on camera:
-People have died in ICE detention from medical neglect, preventable illness, brutality, and despair
-Families are ripped apart through detention, transfer, and deportation
-Children are locked in facilities, traumatized, and separated from parents

Immigrant communities live under constant threat- where a simple traffic stop, workplace raid, or knock can mean permanent separation or death. ICE is violence. Deportation is violence. And what happened to Renee Nicole Good is violence. Every person deserves to live free from government-inflicted harm.

Take action by:
-Support local organizers protecting immigrant families, workers, and school communities.
-Build skills for collective safety.
-Prioritize mental health and mutual support. Trauma ripples across families and practitioners.

NASW Ohio urges elected officials, public agencies, and policymakers to:
-Immediately halt violent federal enforcement actions in neighborhoods, homes, and schools
-Demand full accountability for the preventable killing of Renee Nicole Good
-End policies that criminalize migration and traumatize families
-Redirect resources from militarized enforcement systems to community-rooted care, safety, and support

Congratulations to the 2025 Statewide Student of the Year: Aaron Thomas 🎊

Aaron is currently pursuing a Master of Social Work at The Ohio State University. He brings over a decade of experience in equity-centered program leadership and community advocacy into his graduate social work training. Currently serving as the Program Manager for the ASPIRE Program at the OSU College of Medicine, Aaron leads a high-impact initiative designed to support and prepare students from underrepresented backgrounds for careers in medicine and research. In this role, he leads strategic planning, manages a complex operating budget, coordinates national recruitment efforts, and facilitates longitudinal mentorship, all while centering Diversity, Equity, Belonging, and Inclusion (DEBI) across every level of the program.

In addition to his academic and professional leadership, Aaron serves as the MSW Student Representative on the NASW Ohio Board of Directors, contributing a strong student voice to statewide governance. His ability to bridge systems-level leadership with direct service experience reflects a deep commitment to advancing equity, mentorship, and the future of the social work profession.

🎉Congratulations to the 2025 Ohio Statewide Agency of the Year: Women Helping Women

WHW’s mission is to prevent gender-based violence and empower all survivors. WHW now provides services to survivors in five Ohio counties (Hamilton, Adams, Brown, Butler, and Clermont), an expansion that has led to a 538% increase in the number of sexual assault survivors served by the agency over 5 years. 2024: WHW provided services to a record number of survivors and youth, answering 19,792 hotline calls, providing more than 6,000 court services, 1,700 on-scene DVERT responses, 1,400 hospital responses, and 20,000+ prevention services in schools. WHW also rapidly dispersed $900,000+ in emergency financial assistance to survivors to prevent evictions and ensure safety.

Beyond the scale of services delivered, WHW is recognized for its innovative prevention strategies, survivor-centered approach, and ability to adapt and lead amid shifting funding and community needs. Its work reflects a sustained commitment to survivor self-determination, accessibility, and advocacy, strengthening systems of safety and support across Southwest Ohio.

This is about you. Your values. Your voice. Your need for community, growth, and impact in a profession that asks so much of you every day. Whether you are just starting out, finding your footing, or thinking about how to make change beyond your individual role, you are not meant to do this work alone. NASW Ohio exists so you can connect, learn, advocate, and show up in ways that are bigger than any one of us — for your clients, for the profession, and for the next generation of social workers.

Know Your Rights: Protecting Immigrant Clients and Communities in Ohio

Immigration and Customs Enforcement has recently ramped up enforcement efforts in Columbus and across Ohio. These actions create fear and instability for immigrant communities and directly affect clients seeking health, behavioral health, education, and social services. In moments like this, social workers have an ethical responsibility not only to protect clients, but to push back against harm, abuse of power, and violations of human rights. Political engagement is part of our professional obligation. One way we resist is by knowing our rights, sharing accurate information, documenting abuses, and supporting organizations on the ground that are protecting immigrant communities. If you or a loved one has been abused in immigration detention, you can report it and get support by calling 419-777-HELP (4357) or emailing [email protected]. If you see an arrest, stay calm. Panic and chaos are part of how harm spreads, and preparation saves lives. Document accurately and do not spread rumors. Use the S.A.L.U.T.E. framework to report ICE activity by noting the size or strength of the agents present, their actions, the location and direction of movement, their uniforms or clothing, the time of the incident, and any visible equipment or weapons. Photos and videos can be reported by calling the Ohio National Lawyers Guild arrest hotline at 614-654-6477 or by emailing observations and media to [email protected]

Knowing your rights as a provider is also essential. A helpful resource for social workers and other professionals is Health Care Providers and Immigration Enforcement. While written for health care settings, the guidance is highly relevant for social workers in other service environments. Read at https://tinyurl.com/3f993trs

Social workers also have a duty to engage politically, to pay attention, to follow the lead of impacted communities, and to push back collectively against systems that cause harm.

This year marks 70 years of NASW, and this video captures what that legacy truly looks like in Ohio. 💙You’ll hear from long-time members who have spent decades helping to shape the profession, alongside new social workers and students who are just beginning their journeys. Across generations, one message is clear: social work is stronger when we are connected. NASW Ohio has been a home for advocacy, professional growth, ethical leadership, and community. Being involved means more than a membership- it means continuing education, staying informed on legislative and policy changes, building relationships across the profession, mentoring and being mentored, and ensuring social workers have a collective voice where decisions are made. As we celebrate this milestone, we are also looking forward. The future of social work depends on all of us showing up- seasoned professionals making space, and new members bringing energy, vision, and courage. Our impact is greatest when we organize together, support one another, and invest in the next generation. Seventy years in, the work continues — and there is a place for you in it.
