Stretchingโ€ฆ And hereโ€™s why! ๐Ÿ’™

Just like in humans, horses can benefit from regular stretches for so many different reasons! Stretching helps to increase flexibility, reduce chances of injury, and improve tissue health. The horse pictured below tends to hold a lot of tension in his lower back, into his hind end. The stretch show in the photo is helping to relieve that tension. With regular stretching I have noticed that he will stride out much better and does not seem to get as sore throughout those areas!

Ask about different stretches you can try for your horse at your next appointment! ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ’™

What is the Hyoid Apparatus? More specifically, how does it affect your horse?

Here are some things you might notice if your horse needs their Hyoid worked on!

โ€ข Chomping at the bit
โ€ข Tossing their head
โ€ข Difficulty chewing or swallowing
โ€ข Avoiding haltering and/or bridling
โ€ข Ectโ€ฆ

Now that you have seen some of the signs, read about the Hyoid and what it does!

The hyoid apparatus in a horse is a small, delicate set of bones located deep in the throat between the branches of the lower jaw. It supports the tongue, larynx, and pharynx, playing a crucial role in chewing, swallowing, and vocalizing. Through an intricate web of muscles and connective tissue, the hyoid is also linked to the poll, neck, and even the chest, meaning tension or injury here can influence a horseโ€™s posture, movement, and performance. Though often overlooked, the hyoid is essential for both basic functions and athletic balance.

The horse pictured below fights the bit by trying to keep his tounge over the bit. He was also out at the poll when he had chiro work done, and had not had proper teeth care in the past! All of these things led me to believe that he would benefit from some work around his Hyoid. I used deep tissue pressure and KT tape to relieve the pain/pressure around the area. He had lots of licks and chews and seemed much more relaxed after the session!

Letโ€™s talk saddle fit! ๐Ÿด

Recently I have been struggling with one of my own horses concerning saddle fit, so I wanted to jump on here and talk about the importance of proper saddle fit!

Having a bad fit can effect your horses entire body. The most common area of concern tends to be muscle soreness in the back. When a saddle is too wide or too narrow it causes uneven pressure. This causes the horse to become sore in the areas that are affected. Similar to a human, horses will attempt to relieve the pain by using their body incorrectly. A couple examples would be shortening their stride and holding their head high.

Over time this can cause muscle atrophy, saddle sores, cinchy behaviors, and even white patches of hair caused from lost blood flow!

While finding a good fitting saddle might be difficult, expensive, and time consuming, the results will be worth it! Keeping your horses comfortable will keep them working well for you. When you put in the time and effort, your horse will reciprocate that in the way they act!

A horse that feels good will always do their very best for you! Horses are animals that want to please. If you care for them they will care for you!

Please reach out if you have any questions or need recommendations! While I am not qualified to assess saddle fit, I will do my very best to hook you up with someone who is!

What is preventative care and why is it so important?

Preventative care is the routine maintenance used to prevent injury and discomfort.

Preventative care is essential to maintaining the overall health and performance of horses, especially those used in sport, work, or recreational riding. Among the many aspects of equine preventative careโ€”such as proper nutrition, hoof care, dental maintenance, and regular veterinary checkupsโ€”bodywork through massage therapy plays a significant and often underappreciated role.

Equine massage therapy involves the manipulation of muscles and soft tissues to promote circulation, reduce tension, and enhance flexibility. Just as in humans, horses can suffer from tight muscles, soreness, and imbalances caused by work, poor conformation, or even stress. When left unaddressed, these small issues can develop into more serious lameness or behavioral problems. Regular bodywork serves as a proactive approach to identifying and resolving physical discomfort before it leads to long-term damage.

One of the greatest benefits of massage is improved range of motion. When muscles become tight or overused, a horse may begin to compensate in its movement, placing strain on other parts of the body. Massage therapy helps release these tight areas, promoting balanced movement and reducing the risk of injury. Additionally, increased circulation from massage supports faster recovery from exercise and helps remove metabolic waste from muscle tissue.

Massage therapy also plays a key role in detecting early signs of discomfort. Trained equine bodyworkers can often feel subtle changes in muscle tone, temperature, or tension that may not yet be obvious to the owner or rider. This early detection allows for prompt adjustments in training, tack, or veterinary care.

This is a great read! Releasing the Fascia is a huge part of each and every horses session with me. Understanding why is so important so check this out!

When we talk about fascia in horses, most people picture a web of tissue wrapping around muscles, tendons, and organs. And thatโ€™s accurateโ€”but hereโ€™s the surprising part: fascia isnโ€™t physically connected to joints.

Joints are made up of bone, cartilage, synovial fluid, ligaments, and a joint capsule. Fascia doesnโ€™t attach directly to these structures the way a tendon attaches muscle to bone. Instead, it surrounds and interconnects the muscles, tendons, and ligaments that move and stabilize those joints.

Movement Translation: When fascia is restricted or dehydrated, it changes how the surrounding muscles and tendons move. That altered motion affects how force is transferred through the joint.
โ€ข Stability Influence: Fascial tension can pull on muscle groups, changing joint alignment and loadโ€”even without direct contact.
โ€ข Communication Pathways: Fascia is rich in nerve endings and proprioceptors, meaning it helps the horse โ€œfeelโ€ where its body is in space. Dysfunction in fascia can create protective patterns around joints, even if the joint itself isnโ€™t injured.

Think of fascia like the rigging on a sailboatโ€”it doesnโ€™t touch the rudder directly, but it can absolutely influence how the rudder moves.

- A horse with tight fascia may show signs of joint discomfort or stiffness even if the joint itself is healthy.
- Addressing fascial health can improve performance, flexibility, and joint longevity.

- Tight or restricted fascia? โž Changes how muscles fire โž Changes how joints move โž Hello stiffness, compensations, and sometimes even pain.
