Not much going on this winter. It is currently 25 degrees but sunny. The snowstorm of last week has melted, just leaving a few patches that are shaded from the sun. Boomer likes to wait under the tree near the house, he can see if I am coming outside to feed Mokey. He likes to stand under Mokey’s feed in case he drops any. Boomer gets impatient after a while waiting and will start going in and out of the pet door to check to see if I am on my way outside. It has taken him over 6 months to drop his always worried expression. He and Whiskey get along great and we will continue with our joring when the weather warms up.

Every farm, no matter how little or big, needs a couple of farm dogs. Whiskey is always ready to ride and it appears that new dog Boomer is just as eager. My little dog Smudge gave me 13 happy years and we miss him!

All the dogs that I have had over the years have been adopted shelter dogs or other peoples castaways.

Boomer is a bit leary of things but he is coming around!

What a pretty day. My fields are getting mowed again, finally! Thank goodness and thanks to Mr Rice and his John Deere!

Garden update - I have a tomato! The smallest plant of the four that I bought has a lovely little fruit on it. The other three are doing good with nice blossoms.

The summer squash has the beginnings of a fruit as well. The cucumbers don’t look quite as happy but they are coming along. The warm weather should kick them into a higher gear.

Finally filled in another raised bed with “stuff”. I will put beans in there.

Lettuce is up in the pallet and planted more the other day. Also some spinach.

I am liking my little raised beds. They are very neat and with my w**d wacker, I don’t have to worry about mowing around them.

The flower mix for butterflies & hummingbirds finally is filling in the three tiered bed.

The garden is progressing. Some of the cucumber & summer squash from my experiment with the paper towels and baggies. Some of the old seeds from 2016 did sprout but they looked pathetic. However the new seeds are looking good! They were put in potting soil earlier in the week and I will transplant them later.

I went to a local nursery and bought flowers for my hanging baskets that are on my back porch. I have four now and they are between the hummingbird feeders. Still waiting on those little beggars to arrive.

This morning I lined this pallet with landscape cloth and them carried more rabbit p**p up from the carport. Then I top dressed with store bought potting soil and have just put lettuce seeds in one of the rows.

The last picture is a poinsettia that was just repotted. I have never tried to keep one and am hoping that it will thrive.

Also bought at the nursery were four tomato plants. They are near my “fun fort”. The flower seeds that are in the three-tiered boxes have yet to poke up.

Lawn has been push mowed in the front. Waiting for a carburetor for the rider. I hope I can change it out by myself!

I have not been very diligent with posting as things were very quiet here. But I am determined to get gardening again. Years ago, I had a HUGE vegetable garden. I did a lot of canning and freezing. Now I plan on mainly freezing. Time will tell!

The first picture is of the lower corner of my backyard. I had gotten some wooden boxes and have put them to use this year. I have stacked some of them so that I have three tiers and will put the mixed flowers in them. They are filled with a mix of manures from when I had rabbits and the different fowl. Rabbit manure is one of the best to use.

I am following the Old Farmers Almanac and planting by the phases of the moon. My late ex mother-in-law always gardened this way and she had a fantastic garden.

I am also going to see about sprouting seeds on paper towels. Fingers crossed!

My monthly page post. The farm name could be changed to One Horse Ranch or maybe Single Chicken Homestead. But I will keep it the same.

To make traveling easier for now, I have decided to cut way back on critters. My old Arab mare died back a few months ago and I was a bit worried about having just one horse. But Mokey seems to be just fine. And there are always horses in view since I border a hunter/jumper farm.

All of the chickens except one are now at my sons place. I got so tired of losing birds to what must be a coyote. So hopefully I can entice the single bird into a cage and rehome her. She insists on roosting in the tree by the barn and I am not climbing up a tree!

I have tried to change the farm info with no luck from my phone. Guess I will have to use my laptop if I can remember how! 😂

All of the sudden I have more page followers, not sure why but I appreciate it!

Why a picture of animal clippers? Well, I decided to go through my barn cabinet. It is an old metal hand-me-down and the doors have rusted off after many years. Looking at the boxes of clippers and assorted pieces, I thought to bring them in the house to oil, clean them up and see if they still work.

I had forgotten how many clippers I currently have. There is this set of Sunbeam Clipmasters that are heavy but mighty work horse clippers. A small set cordless Wahl clippers that are plugged in to charge but it is questionable right now if they will come back to life.

Another set of Oster Pros that are waiting on the batteries to charge. Needless to say that none of the clippers have been used in a few years!

However the last set of clippers in the old cabinet were the ones that made tears come to my eyes and flooded my brain with memories of my brother Allen. The clippers are a corded set of Wahl Stablepros.

Back many, many years ago, my brother borrowed my old Sunbeams. He was showing his dairy goats and I guess his set of clippers bit the dust. To replace my clippers, he gave me a nice new set of corded animal clippers. While I can’t swear that these Wahl clippers are the same ones, they sure brought back that memory and it came with tears.

My brother and I were the “farm” kids of the family. He with his dairy goats and chickens and I with my horses and miscellaneous critters. My brother died this year in January and there are so many times that I want to talk to him about some family thing or share about my critters.

Missing my brother but so glad that we shared so much in our lives! Now to continue with the cabinet clean out.

I have never seen deer in my pasture before, they must like my w**ds!

My niece asked me what the critter count is the other day - 2 horses, 13 laying hens, 2 dogs and one cat. Very quiet most of the time around here now. The w**ds keep growing in this summer heat and the grass slows down.

My Mokey has his teeth floated in January. I was worried about him as he was losing weight. Well, he sure has picked up! I have cut his feed back a little at a time and keep him off the pathetic pastures for several hours. He & Jem (who I have always had to shovel the feed at her but she always stays the same) hangout in their stalls with the fan on during the heat of the day.

The dogs and I walk at least a mile every morning. They look forward to it, the silly beasts!

My longtime egg customer is moving in a few weeks. I will miss his English accent and his British knee socks, no matter the weather!

So things just keep turning “turdish” her at the farm. Unfortunately the chicken numbers are dwindling just when they are picking up with the egg production. I went away over one night and came home to find several piles of feathers here and there. My farm tender saw no signs of any problems in the morning. But by noon I had at least 3 dead girls. One totally missing, two I found in the pastures. They were not messed up at all, just dead. I have no idea what happened. One was my favorite Maggie the Moran. At least I know where she is, the other was a pretty Americauna. Having eggs is good, having chickens problems is bad! The other girls are staying close to the barn/port.
