I grew up on a farm just south of Columbus but have lived in the Short North neighborhood for about 16 years. I have always been an animal lover. Big, small, farm animals, house pets, I love them all! My company name was inspired by my dog Pablo. He is truly my best friend. I had always been the 'go to' pet sitter for all of my friends and family so I decided to make it official last year and Pablo's Pals was born. I am very, very, protective over my pets. When I leave town or need help on a busy day with taking care of them I stress over who is going to do it and how it is going to go. I know how important it is to know your pets are in good hands and will be well taken care of. That feeling of reassurance and sense of relief is priceless! 🐾 CALLING ALL ANIMAL LOVERS — PABLO’S PALS IS LOOKING FOR EXTRA HELP! 🐾

Are you an animal lover looking for a way to earn some supplemental income during the day? Spending your afternoons walking dogs and caring for pets might sound like a pretty great gig—and it is! 😊 But there’s also a lot of responsibility that comes along with it.

Pablo’s Pals Pet Service is looking to add a few wonderful dog walkers and pet sitters to our team, with our biggest current need being Monday–Friday during the daytime, especially between 11 AM–2 PM.

While this is part-time, supplemental work, we are VERY PARTICULAR about who we bring onto the Pablo’s Pals team. Our clients trust us with two of the most important things in their lives—their pets and their homes—and we take that responsibility very seriously. We’re looking for people who will do the same.

🐶 First and foremost, you MUST genuinely love animals! 🐱

We’re also looking for someone who:

🐾 Is dependable, responsible, and professional
🐾 Takes their commitments seriously
🐾 Is physically capable of walking multiple miles a day
🐾 Is comfortable working outdoors in all kinds of weather—we work year-round!
🐾 Has a reliable vehicle and smartphone
🐾 Is patient, attentive, and comfortable working independently
🐾 Is willing to submit to a full federal background check
🐾 Is willing to become CPR & First Aid certified for dogs and cats
🐾 Has great communication and customer service skills—a definite plus!

Previous professional animal-care experience is wonderful, but finding the RIGHT PERSON is just as important to us. Reliability, good judgment, patience, professionalism, and a genuine love for animals are qualities we simply won’t compromise on.

🐾 HELP US FIND RORY HIS PERFECT HOME 🐾-PLEASE SHARE

This is an incredibly difficult post to make, and an even more heartbreaking decision for my client, Rory’s owner.

My client is 85 years old and recently lost her husband. Along with that enormous life change, she had to say goodbye to her large home and yard and move into a high-rise condo. She loves Rory dearly and does not want to give him up, but unfortunately, their new living situation simply isn’t working for either of them.

Rory is a 5-year-old, 65-pound Great Pyrenees/Hound mix and an incredibly sweet, lovable boy. At 65 pounds, he’s smaller than you might picture when you hear “Great Pyrenees” — he isn’t exceptionally tall, but he is a strong, sturdy guy with plenty of personality. ❤️ Rory tends to favor women, is good with children and does well with cats.

Rory is leash reactive toward other dogs, but there is an important distinction: Rory does well with other dogs at both doggy daycare and the dog park. His reactivity seems to be specific to encounters while he is on leash. We also feel that with an experienced handler and some dedicated training, this is something Rory could potentially make significant progress with.

Unfortunately, his current environment makes managing that reactivity especially difficult. Navigating shared hallways, elevators and common areas in a high-rise means close encounters with other dogs can be difficult to avoid. At 85, his owner simply cannot safely control a strong dog when he reacts, and she has reached the heartbreaking realization that their current living situation is no longer safe or appropriate for either of them.

We would love to find Rory a home where he can truly thrive.

Rory’s ideal home would be:
• A stand-alone home, ideally with a securely fenced yard
• Preferably no other dogs, despite his success with dogs in off-leash social settings
• No condo, apartment or other shared living environment where close encounters with other dogs are unavoidable
• Someone comfortable with — and ideally experienced with — leash-reactive dogs who is willing to continue working with him
• Someone who works from home, is retired, or otherwise isn't away for long stretches. Rory has always lived with people who are home much of the day, and we'd love for that companionship to continue.
• A home that can provide a consistent routine, structure and clear expectations
• Women are definitely a favorite for Rory! ❤️
• Children and cats are welcome — Rory does well with both!

Rory is not a bad dog. He is a wonderful dog with a specific challenge that has become increasingly difficult for his owner to safely manage in their current environment. He does especially well with structure and routine, and we believe the right person, environment and training could make an enormous difference for him.

While our priority is absolutely finding the right home for Rory rather than simply the fastest one, there is some urgency. Winter is approaching, and icy and snowy conditions make it even more difficult — and potentially dangerous — for his owner to safely handle a strong dog if he reacts while they're outside. We would love to have Rory settled into the right home as soon as that perfect fit can be found.

His owner is absolutely heartbroken. This isn't a decision she wants to make. It's a decision she's making because she loves Rory enough to recognize that her circumstances have changed and he deserves a home and environment where both he and his person can feel safe and successful.

✨🔎 October Spotlight: The Mysterious, Magical Black Cat 🔍✨

For October, we’re putting a little Halloween twist on our usual Breed Spotlight! Instead of celebrating one particular breed, we’re shining the moonlight on some of our favorite felines: black cats! 🖤

Few animals have collected quite as much folklore over the centuries as the black cat. Long before they became a familiar Halloween icon, cats held a special place in ancient cultures. In ancient Egypt, cats were admired for their hunting abilities, protective nature and grace, and their characteristics were associated with several Egyptian deities. They were especially connected with Bastet, a goddess who eventually came to be depicted in feline form.

Centuries later, things took a spookier turn. During the Middle Ages in Europe, cats—particularly black cats—became tangled up in stories about witches, magic and the supernatural. Folklore grew around the idea that black cats could be witches in disguise or serve as their magical companions, known as “familiars.” And just like that, one very innocent kitty ended up with a spooky reputation that would follow it for centuries. 🧙‍♀️🐈‍⬛

But here’s the fun part: black cats haven’t always meant bad luck! Their reputation varies quite a bit depending on where you are in the world. In some traditions, black cats have actually been considered signs of good fortune and prosperity. Cats also spent centuries aboard ships, where their impressive mouse-catching skills made them valuable members of the crew—and cats themselves were sometimes considered lucky companions at sea. ⚓🐈‍⬛

Today, their mysterious reputation makes black cats a perfect symbol of Halloween. With those glowing eyes, sleek coats and their uncanny ability to silently appear in a doorway when you least expect it, we have to admit…they do have the spooky aesthetic down. 👀

But anyone lucky enough to know a black cat knows the truth: underneath all that supposed mystery is usually a sweet, silly, affectionate little house panther. 🖤

And Pablo’s Pals is lucky enough to care for quite a crew of them! Please give some October love to our pack of spooky floofs!🐈‍⬛🎃🐈‍⬛

The 51st Short North Tour of Homes & Gardens is happening this Sunday, September 20th, from 10:00 AM–4:00 PM. It’s a wonderful opportunity to get out, meet neighbors, and explore some of the beautiful homes and gardens that make our community so special.

🐾 🔎BREED SPOTLIGHT: THE SCOTCH COLLIE 🔍🐾

Meet the beautiful Revy, one of Pablo’s Pals’ very own Scotch Collies! ❤️

If she looks a little like the classic “Lassie” type, there’s a good reason for that. Scotch Collies are the old-fashioned working collies that helped shape the Collie breeds we know today. Developed as versatile farm dogs in Scotland, they were expected to do a little bit of everything—herd livestock, help around the farm, keep watch, and, of course, be a loyal companion to their humans.

🧠 Smart is an understatement. Scotch Collies were bred to think and problem-solve rather than simply wait for commands. They tend to be highly trainable, observant, and very tuned in to their people.

🐑 They’re working dogs at heart. Historically, these dogs weren’t bred primarily for appearance. Farmers valued dogs that were athletic, hardy, intelligent, and useful—which is why Scotch Collies can vary quite a bit in looks, coat, and size compared with more standardized breeds.

👀 They notice EVERYTHING. That herding-dog brain means a Scotch Collie may know exactly where every person, dog, squirrel, delivery driver, and suspiciously misplaced throw pillow is at all times. 😂

❤️ They tend to be devoted family dogs. Scotch Collies are known for forming close bonds with their people and often have a sensitive, affectionate side to go along with all those brains.

🎓 And Revy has an especially cool story…

She was almost the mascot of Texas A&M! Revy was actually in the running to become the university’s famous mascot, Reveille, but another Collie was ultimately selected—and that twist of fate is how Revy ended up finding the home she has today. We think things worked out pretty darn well. 🥰

And here’s the fun connection: Texas A&M’s Reveille tradition dates all the way back to 1931, and since Reveille III took over in 1966, the university’s mascots have been Rough Collies.

So while Revy may not have become the “First Lady of Aggieland,” she DID become a Pablo’s Pal—which, around here, is a pretty prestigious title too. 😉🐾

We’re very happy this almost-famous girl found her way into our pack! ❤️

Tophy and Nico took full advantage of some dog park time with Pablo’s Pals! For pups who would rather chase balls, stretch their legs, and enjoy a little off-leash fun, we’re happy to swap their regular walk for a trip to the dog park when requested. 💚

Sometimes the best walk… isn’t a walk at all! 🐶
