Can anyone adopt a rooster?
Post from Good Sprout Rescue and Sanctuary
Good Sprout Rescue and Sanctuary has recently taken on a massive suspected cockfighting case, and we are doing our best to find safe homes for the survivors. Most of the time, birds seized during cockfighting investigations are euthanized, but thankfully these birds are being given the very rare opportunity to be rescued. While this is wonderful, there are well over 250 birds in need of a safe place to land. If they cannot find placement before the deadline, they will be euthanized.
If you or someone you know can provide a safe home to a rooster survivor (hens are available for adoption alongside roosters, however we are not looking for hen-only placements 🙏🏼) please, please reach out! We are searching for homes that can provide the following for their birds:
- predator protection
- veterinary care
- the ability for their rooster survivor to be the only rooster in his flock
Due to their background and breeding, it is recommended that rooster survivors of cockfighting do not live with other roosters. However, they are very sweet, gentle, and chivalrous with their hens (and humans too)! All of these birds have been through unimaginable cruelty and horror, and they deserve the chance to live safe, happy lives. If you are new to chickens and need help getting set up or learning how to care for them, we can help with that! As of right now, only about half of the birds have safe placement — we are desperately, desperately searching for homes for as many survivors as possible before time runs out. The majority of the birds are juveniles, only roughly 12-14 weeks old. They are currently located in southern PA, however transport is available anywhere!
