Dogs can be a great asset for finding deer sheds in the woods! The best way to get a good start on training is to let your puppy teeth on antlers. As with all chew toys monitor your puppy at all times while he or she has access to the antler. Playing fetch and tug-of-war with deer sheds can help stimulate a positive response in your puppy as well! For best results, be sure to take the antler away before your puppy starts to become bored with it. The goal is to make antlers a high quality reward for your puppy! Meet Luna! This sweet girl recently came to Missouri Marsh Dogs for E-Collar Training. She already knew her command to come, so we jumped right into collar recognition. After 2 quick lessons Luna is responding well to pressure from her collar and her owner is thrilled to have confidence in her even when the leash is off! E-Collars are a great reinforcement tool, that if trained properly is not always necessary to use! If you’re interested in having your dog trained to an E-Collar contact me, Christina Mueller, through Missouri Marsh Dog page!

When house breaking a puppy it can be helpful to keep your puppy on a strict routine. Provide your puppy with food and a limited amount of water at the same time every day. This will help your puppy acclimate faster to your home and daily schedule! Plus, it makes predicting their bowl movements much easier, so you can have them on the grass when their ready to go! I also recommend keeping a clear distinction between bathroom time and play time. For the first few weeks to a month only use outside time for potty breaks and keep inside time for playing and resting! One question I get asked often is "How did you get your dogs to enjoy the water?". Even though some breeds are specifically bred for water work, they can often refuse to swim. Typically this is due to a fear. The younger you start working with your puppy in the water the easier they will accept it. One key point to remember is not to force your dog (no matter their age) to swim. Toys can be a great way to motivate your dog to conquer their fears. Start out slow in quiet shallow water and gradually move into deeper water as they become comfortable. The goal here is to make this the best experience possible. So remember patience is a virtue and praise accordingly for forward progress! For more help in training contact me, Christina Mueller, through the Missouri Marsh Dog messenger!

Spring is here and the hiking trails in Columbia are a great place to get excess energy out of your dog! However, before you unclip the leash it is important that your dog has a strong recall. E-Collars can be a great tool for reinforcement of your recall command, but in order to be effective the dog must be trained to know what the stimulus means. I highly recommend contacting a professional to properly train your dog to the E-Collar. MMD offers E-Collar training for a great price, simply message me, Christina Mueller, through Missouri Marsh Dog Facebook messenger to set up a training session!

My passion for dog training (specifically Retrieval Training) all started with my golden retriever Finley. I started working with him when we brought him home at 8 weeks old. Now he’s about 9 months old and refining his skills for his first hunt this fall! There is nothing this dog loves more than retrieving. Call or direct message to start your dog’s training today!
