When I started working with CHARM, I was all about the dogs. I have two rescued dogs of my own, one of which is very anxious and dog-reactive. I've always wanted to foster, but bringing another dog into our house really wasn't an option.
Then, we found an abandoned kitten in our neighborhood and ended up temporarily fostering her during the stray hold for our local shelter. And, to my surprise, i𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐒𝐎 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐈 𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐝!
Fast forward, and we're now fostering our fourth and fifth kittens (our second set of siblings). I get a little sad thinking about them leaving, but not sad enough to keep them! 😂 I love the little touch of fun and chaos they bring to our basement, which is now "cat town". The dogs have the first and second floors. We've worked out an arrangement that keeps everyone happy.
Fostering has given me a whole new appreciation for cats and kittens, and for the people who care for them. As President of a rescue that helps both dogs and cats, it's been especially rewarding to experience firsthand the great work our cat team and fosters do every day.
❤️ 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐨𝐧'𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐚𝐧 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭, 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐬𝐞𝐭𝐮𝐩, 𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫. You just have to be willing to open your home and give an animal a safe place to land.
And if you're a dog person who thinks cats aren't for you... you might be surprised!
