The first session with a working line puppy always humbles me real fast LOL

Most people don’t believe that dogs can give consent, but most people also don’t know what it looks like when a dog gives consent versus when they don’t. Here’s a video example of my dog saying no to brushing versus her saying yes to brushing.

These clips are only one day apart. Sometimes my dog just doesn’t want to be brushed. I respect when she says no and will try again at a later time if it’s something that needs to be done. Consent will look different from dog to dog, but once you understand what a dog looks like when opting in versus opting out, you can’t unsee it.

I have practiced consent based grooming with my dog since she was a small puppy, so I’ve become really in tune with what her “yes” looks like along with what her “no” looks like.

Consent is important and matters in all relationships, especially with our dogs. Dogs can consent to anything from grooming procedures to behavior modification exercises. If you’ve never practiced allowing your dog to consent before, it can feel overwhelming. Start small with little questions like, “can I pet you?” And move on from there. Learn what your dog looks like when they say no versus when they say yes. Doing so will deepen your relationship with them further than you ever thought possible.

What does consent look like for your dog? Let me know in the comments🫶
