Did you know that puppies can have "retained" baby teeth? 🐶🦷

If your puppy’s adult teeth are coming in, but their baby teeth (deciduous teeth) haven't fallen out yet, it’s time to talk to your vet!

Why does this happen?
Sometimes a baby tooth doesn't fall out as it should, forcing the incoming adult tooth to grow in at an abnormal angle.

What happens if they aren't removed?
Leaving them in can lead to painful infections, premature tooth decay, and long-term dental issues that may require more complex procedures later on.

Check your pup’s mouth regularly and give your vet a call if you notice any "double teeth"! Your dog’s future smile will thank you. 😊

Breed Spotlight: The Pomsky! 🐾

Have you met a Pomsky lately? These adorable "mini-huskies" have been stealing hearts since they first appeared in the early 2010s. As a cross between a Pomeranian and a Siberian Husky, they bring together the best of both worlds—the striking, wolf-like looks of a Husky in a much smaller, more compact package.

Here are a few things that make this designer breed so unique:

✨ Personality Plus: Pomskies are known for being highly intelligent, playful, and full of personality. They definitely keep their families on their toes!
✨ Stunning Features: From their fluffy double coats to their incredible eye colors (including blue, amber, and even two different colored eyes), no two Pomskies look exactly the same.
✨ High Energy: Don't let their size fool you—they often inherit a lot of that famous Husky energy. They love regular exercise and plenty of mental stimulation to stay happy.
✨ Grooming Needs: That beautiful, thick coat means they need regular brushing to keep their fur healthy and manage shedding.

Because they are a mixed breed, their size, temperament, and appearance can vary quite a bit, which is part of what makes them so special.

Medical Monday at Towne Center Animal Hospital! 🐾

Today we’re talking about a common but serious emergency: foreign body ingestion. Whether you have a curious puppy who loves to chew or a cat who can't resist a piece of string, foreign objects can pose a major health risk.

What are foreign bodies?
These are items that are swallowed and become stuck in the gastrointestinal tract. Common culprits include:
- Socks, underwear, and towels
- Toys (especially pieces of rubber or plastic)
- String, yarn, or ribbon (very common in cats!)
- Corn cobs, peach pits, or bones

Why is it dangerous? ⚠️
When an object gets stuck, it can cause a partial or complete blockage. This prevents food and water from passing through and can cut off blood flow to the intestines, leading to tissue death or a rupture. This is a life-threatening emergency that often requires surgical intervention.

What should you look out for?
If your pet has gotten into something they shouldn't have, watch for these signs:
- Repeated vomiting or retching
- Loss of appetite
- Lethargy or unusual quietness
- Abdominal pain (your pet may stand in a "praying" position or yelp when touched)
- Diarrhea or straining to defecate

Prevention is key!
If you have a chewer, keep "tempting" items like laundry, small toys, and trash cans securely out of reach. If you suspect your pet has eaten something they shouldn't have, don't wait for symptoms to appear—call us immediately. Early intervention is the best way to keep your furry friend safe.

Does your pet love to chew? 🦴 While chewing is a natural behavior, some habits can lead to a painful surprise: a slab fracture.

A slab fracture is a common dental injury where a piece of the tooth enamel breaks off, often exposing the sensitive pulp inside. It most frequently happens when pets chew on objects that are too hard—such as real bones, antlers, cow hooves, or extremely hard nylon toys.

Why this is a serious concern:

* Pain: Once the sensitive inner layer of the tooth is exposed, it is often incredibly painful for your pet, even if they don't show obvious signs of discomfort.

* Infection: An exposed pulp chamber provides a direct pathway for bacteria to enter the tooth, which can quickly lead to painful tooth root abscesses.

* Systemic Health: Untreated dental disease can allow bacteria to enter the bloodstream, which may eventually affect your pet’s heart, liver, and kidney health.

The good news is that many of these issues are preventable. Regular dental checkups and professional cleanings are the best way to catch fractures, periodontal disease, and other issues early—before they become a major problem for your pet.
